Objections in Kandy MC for motor races

Questions were raised at the Kandy Muncipal Council meeting as to who gave permission to run a night racing spree on the roads of Kandy on March 11 and 12.
The Mayor of Kandy Raja Pushpakumara said that he gave approval to refer the matter to the Council.
Councillor Anura Gonawela said George E. de Silva road in Kandy would be completely closed from March 11 noon till March 12 , until the roads are free from motor races. He questioned the Mayor, as to who sought permission and why permission for this road race was granted.
The Mayor said at first he refused to grant permission but the organisers had shown letters that permission had been granted earlier.
Councillor Gonawela and Councillor Illhai Abdeen said there was bound to be environment pollution. They also added that the sound and thrust of the engines could bring about detrimental effects on buildings.
They pointed out that they have no objection of running car races, in areas like airfields and such vast areas. They said Kandy had religious institutions and they should also be consulted before permission is given for such events.
