

Woman donates S$1m to Japan quake victims

SINGAPORE: Twenty-four-year-old Singaporean Elaine Low has donated S$1 million to the victims of the earthquake in Japan.
Ms Low presented the cheque on Wednesday to Japanese Ambassador Yoichi Suzuki at the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, together with her father, Mr T K Low.
Mr Low, who heads PT Bayan Resources, said the company has business ties with Japan which go back a long way.
He said his family also has friends and relatives in Japan.
The Bayan Group owns and operates one of the largest coal terminals in Indonesia.
Ambassdor Suzuki said this is the largest donation received for the tsunami victims so far.
He said the money will go to the Singapore Red Cross which will decide how best to distribute it.
