Arabic is the language of Arabs. Sri Lankan Moors are not Arabs. Nor do all Sri Lankan Moors have roots in Arabia. Even if they do, we have over the last 600 years evolved into a distinct ethnic group of our own. For purposes of communication with other members of the Sri Lankan Community we have learnt one or both of the two key National Languages – Sinhala and Tamil. There is absolutely no need to introduce a third National Language for this purpose. Neither is a third language needed for communication within the Sri Lankan Moor Community. For purposes of reciting the Holy Quran we have learnt Arabic. This in my opinion is sufficient for Sri Lankan Moors.
Learn Arabic, by all means. Why not ?. After all many Sri Lankans learn French, German, Spanish, Mandarin don’t they ? Learn Arabic for purposes of employment or to enjoy Arabic Literature. But to encourage learning Arabic to be perceived as a distinct Ethnic Group would at this point in time be divisive and result in heightening the existing ‘tensions’ with other non-Islamic Sri Lankans. A case in point is the support currently being extended to the Pakistan Cricket Team by a handful of Sri Lankan Muslims on the grounds that the Pakistan is a Muslim Country, which has resulted in such Muslims ( and by extension all Sri Lankan Muslims) being perceived as being more loyal to another Country than to their Motherland.
The Government is presently taking the necessary steps to lay the foundation on which the future of our Motherland will be built based on Peace and Reconciliation. As a responsible Community, we should ensure that our words and deeds do not weaken these twin processes of Peace and Reconciliation between the citizens of our Motherland. We must bear in mind that there are ‘external forces’ waiting to exploit such weaknesses.

Sri Lankan Moors - ( Lanka Yonaka , Marakala ) ( majority of lankan muslim ) = Arab roots.

Sri Lankan Malay Muslims = indonesian and malaysian roots

Sri Lankan Bhai Muslims = Pakistan and North Indian roots
