It was revealed yesterday that it cost Sri Lanka a mammoth sum of a hundred million rupees to submit its bid to host the Commonwealth Games in Hambantota in 2018.
The amount for just the bid surpasses all costs that Sri Lanka has ever incurred to host any sporting event in the country according to analysts and estimates.
Sri Lanka will be competing against Australia’s fastest growing city Gold Coast to secure the bid.
An official of the National Olympic Committee who did not wish to be quoted told the media yesterday at a promotional launch that while Sri Lanka may go flat out to win the bid, the country lacked the capacity to host the 72-nation Games which is second only to the Olympics.

SL government also paid US$ 2 million (SL Rs. 220 million) to an UK public relations firm (Pmp Legacy) for promotional work.
