Wow, so many responses so quickly, I am amazed!

I have a ton of questions, but not sure if I should ask here, or start a new thread. I am also not sure WHICH forum to use!! There are so many forums here. :) Any recommended forums for 'BIG' questions?

Y'know, the big questions that probably need their own thread with their own title? :)

Use the Travel Sri Lanka forum. Its more suited for these purposes. Or you can just use the Talk forum as well.

    Hello, all.

I'm an American, who teaches English in Japan, who wants to visit Sri Lanka.

I've been reading a little bit about it, about Colombo, Hiddakuwa, Kandy, Mirissa, and such. Looks like a great place.

I've also assumed that Sri Lankans were like Indians...quite conservative, don't drink, etc. But, it looks like it is possible to get a beer, and socialize and such as well. Although, my impression is that that probably isn't very popular or common though.

Been studying that cricket is popular (sadly I don't know much about it!). Also, read that there seem to be a lot of Colombo Fashion Shows...although don't know if that is something that is just popular on the internet only. Who knows.

Anyways, just joined the forum, and hope to learn a lot more about Sri Lanka!! :)

Please dont compare us to indians mate. Us Sri Lankans find that really offensive. Most Indians are rude and arrogant twats while the majority of Sri Lankans are humble and friendly people.
And also we love our booze.

Is alcohol more popular with the younger generations? Men and women?

My perception of India is that alcohol is only in a few of the main cities, and mostly men drink, except for the Indian women who live and visit from the UK, etc.?

more men than women but yeah, its somewhat popular amongst the young crowds.
No idea about the boozing habits of the Indians.

Sorry to say that government has a strong resistance for alcohol...they have a programme called "mathata thita" (full stop for alcohol) :(
