Contribute to open source projects of your choice. For example, CNCF projects. It'll help you to get started. Look for something in the mean time. Start something of your own if you don't want to contribute to someone else's project.

no one is going to ask you to join anything and no one is going to ask you for your qualifications. just read some code/issues in a git repo. figure out if you can fix it and fix the issue. they might mentor you. you can join google summer of code as well
