The total length of the light railway is 16 km and will have 16 stations. The station locations are Malabe-IT Park, Battaramulla, Rajagiriya, Cotta Road Railway Station, National Hospital and Fort Railway Station.
At Fort, the LRT line will connect to the planned Multi Model Transport Hub accessible to both railway and bus.
As per the project plan, trains are due to run every 2-3 minutes, with each 4-carriage train having a passenger capacity of over 800, which could be increased by adding more carriages, when necessary.
With a top speed of 80km/hour, travel time between Malabe and Fort will be about 30 minutes.
The project is due to be completed by 2024

The Japanese will not participate in any new project unless the ones agreed on (11 projects) are completed by the Sri Lanka govt.
Even if they agree to help revive the LRT project it will have to be proposed as a completely fresh project on new terms. (The earlier concessional loans will NOT apply anymore).
Since Japan considers Sri Lanka as a friend, it went out of its way to give very low interest loans. But after Gotabaya's foul-up they are angry. So, no more 'friendly gestures' by Japan.
