University of Moratuwa field selection is more than an indication of where engineering is heading, it can also offer a glimpse into where Sri Lanka itself may be heading.
For much of the past decade, Computer Science and Software Engineering represented the most attractive path for many high-performing students. That preference reflected the rapid expansion of Sri Lanka’s IT and business-process outsourcing sectors, the promise of remote employment, and the possibility of earning foreign currency without depending on the country’s limited manufacturing base.
This year’s field-selection data appears to show a striking change. Computer Science and Engineering has fallen close to the bottom of the ranking, while Electronic and Telecommunication, Biomedical, Aeronautical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, and Chemical Engineering occupy the leading positions.
It may reflect growing uncertainty about entry-level software careers, concerns about AI-driven automation, saturation in parts of the technology job market, and a renewed interest in disciplines connected to physical production, healthcare, energy, electronics, infrastructure, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.
That would be significant for Sri Lanka. The country cannot build a resilient economy through software services and outsourcing alone. Long-term economic strength also requires people who can design and manufacture products, modernize agriculture, improve energy systems, develop medical technologies, build infrastructure, strengthen telecommunications, and create export-oriented industries with greater local value addition.
The most encouraging interpretation of these results is not simply that “core engineering is becoming popular again.” It is that the ambitions of young people may be broadening, from joining an existing service economy to building the productive capacity of the country itself.
Whether Sri Lanka can benefit from this shift will depend on what happens next. Student interest must be matched by industrial investment, research funding, modern laboratories, internships, competitive salaries, entrepreneurship support, and national policies that allow engineers to build meaningful careers without leaving the country.
Field selection does not predict the future with certainty, but it reveals what the next generation currently believes is worth building. This year’s results may be an early sign that Sri Lanka’s economic aspirations are beginning to change, from primarily providing services to designing, producing, manufacturing, and innovating.
