Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering has always remained one of the top choices at the University of Moratuwa. The real change is the growing preference for other core engineering fields such as Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Mechatronics, Biomedical, and Aeronautical Engineering.
For years, many private universities heavily promoted Software Engineering because it was easier to offer than laboratory-intensive engineering programs. As a result, the market became crowded with software-related degrees focused mainly on coding, applications, and frameworks rather than deeper engineering principles.
Sri Lanka cannot build a strong industrial economy through software outsourcing alone. The renewed interest in core engineering is encouraging because these fields are directly connected to manufacturing, energy, electronics, infrastructure, healthcare, robotics, and real-world technological development.
