Once again, the so-called United Opposition has rushed to meet the chief Buddhist monks whenever the government attempts to introduce reforms or make changes.
Why does this keep happening?
Whenever the government proposes a reform, these politicians seem to run to the Mahanayake Theros, trying to convince them that everything is wrong. But what exactly is the constitutional or democratic authority given to religious leaders to approve, reject, or influence government policy?
Sri Lanka is a democratic republic. Governments are elected by the people, and national policies should be decided through Parliament, the Constitution, evidence, expertise and the will of the people — not through religious pressure or political rituals.
I respect Buddhism and deeply respect the spiritual role of Buddhist monks. But respect for religion should not mean giving religious institutions political authority over the elected government.
And this is not a new problem. If we look critically at the Mahavamsa and the history of Sri Lanka, we can see how powerful sections of the Buddhist clergy have, at various points in history, influenced kings, political decisions and even changes of rulers. That history should teach us something: religious influence over political power can become dangerous when it goes beyond its legitimate spiritual role.
We must ask ourselves honestly: Do we want to continue these centuries-old political traditions, or do we want to build a modern democratic state?
Look at the recent debate surrounding animal-welfare reforms. Sri Lanka still has hundreds of elephants suffering through abuse, neglect and cruel practices, including in religious environments. When attempts are made to strengthen animal protection, should religious institutions be able to challenge or obstruct legislation simply because some practices are associated with religion?
A modern Sri Lanka must be able to protect people, animals, the environment and the national interest without fear of religious or political pressure.
And to the United Opposition, I would say this:
Instead of repeatedly running to the chief monks whenever you disagree with a government decision, come before the people with evidence, alternative policies and practical solutions. Explain why a reform is wrong. Debate it in Parliament. Challenge it through the proper democratic institutions.
Do not use religion as a political shelter.
The country is changing. The younger generation is demanding accountability, transparency, professionalism and evidence-based governance.
Sri Lanka cannot build a modern future while remaining trapped in the political traditions of the past.
Religion belongs in the hearts and spiritual lives of the people. Government belongs to the people and the Constitution.
It is time to draw that line clearly.
