Colombo,Sep.19 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka has called for greater use of traditional and modern passive cooling methods to reduce dependence on air conditioning and cut carbon emissions.
The proposal was presented by the Sri Lankan delegation at the Global Cooling Pledge Assembly 2026, held from September 15 to 18 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Cool Coalition.
Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakody, who attended the assembly, said passive cooling methods could help maintain indoor temperatures in homes and commercial buildings at around 23–25°C without heavy use of air conditioning.
The Sri Lankan delegation stressed the need to introduce these methods through practical measures suited to local conditions.
Sri Lanka also highlighted plans to develop a National Cooling Policy to reduce carbon emissions and address rising global temperatures.
The assembly focused on solutions to extreme heat and promoting environmentally friendly cooling systems.
It is said promoting passive cooling would be an important part of its efforts to strengthen climate resilience.
