The number of daily train services operating on the Northern Railway Line has dropped from 18 to eight following Cyclone Ditwah, causing inconvenience to commuters, the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association said.
Association Secretary Kasun Chamara Jayasekara said the reduction had significantly limited travel options for passengers, particularly on Wednesdays, when only a limited number of services, including the Intercity Express and Night Mail trains, were available.
He added that the Yal Devi Express was also operating only on alternate days, further inconveniencing passengers travelling along the Northern Line.
Meanwhile, train services on several routes connecting Colombo Fort with Badulla, Matale, Kandy and Hatton have also been severely reduced, with only eight of the 42 daily passenger and freight services operating at present. The remaining 34 services have been suspended, he said.
Jayasekara further said the association had repeatedly requested the restoration of normal train operations on the Up Country Line following the resumption of services to Gampola last month.
However, the authorities had not yet given a favourable response to those requests, he added.
