including that machan, it's still the wrong move. banning a entire party pushed them over the limit. if JR didn't do that jvp will keep failing from elections no matter what. or they could have taken care of the masterminds one by one (like they ended up doing after whole this went south) without banning the party. JR's move made insignificant 1-3% party in a democratic country to a 1-3% terrorist organization. guess which is more damaging.

JVP was banned by Sirimao first after 1971 riots and JR released them in 77 and used it as a tool to weaken the Bandaranaike govt. If you know what socialism is, you will know Bandaranaikes were the real socialists who implemented socialism in Sri Lanka practically with NM Perera’s economic reforms(And it ruined the Sri Lankan economy). Releasing and Letting a bunch of radicalised Bolsheviks claiming to be the real socialists while criticising upper class socialists like Bandaranaikes and her associates could weaken the SLFP’s monopoly on left wing. That was JR’s target. But it was a bad move which brought up bad consequences. Sirimavo’s economic policies had already ruined the country to the point where there was going to be civil unrest(only a gaslighting was required).

There were many educated youths with no economic opportunities. Educated poor people are prone to rebel. Without considering that, releasing the lowlife JVP radicals was the worst move. Eventually, they started their second riot, and some people also fell for it because of the poverty created by Bandaranaike’s socialist reforms.

Bad relations with India were a problem, as mentioned. India was also following a somewhat socialist path, just like Sri Lanka. The main reason behind this socialist approach was that these governments came to power by criticising imperialism and promoting nationalism. After taking power, they had to choose a side in the Cold War, and they leaned towards the socialist USSR. Indira Gandhi followed a similar path to Sirimavo(Even though not similarly stupid like Sirimavo, she too was an egoistic stupid bitch to a certain degree like Sirimavo), and the 1991–92 economic reforms reversed many of the policies introduced under Indira’s leadership which recovered their economy. Befriending India was a bad move, but being friends with them would have put the economy in more trouble.
