    If you maintain ur OS installation properly you don't have to format quite a lot, My Drive C has only been formatted once and the XP installation in it is over 3 years old and is fast as it can get, it was on a 160GB disk at first but later i cloned it to a faster 250GB disk thats all I did with it.
