Message: <blockquote data-quote="topedo" data-source="post: 10370986" data-attributes="member: 292030">Internet Access Is A Human RightBy Janith AranzeA United Nations report has deemed that disconnecting people from the Internet is a violation of human rights and in breach of international law.  In a report submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC) this week, the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression concluded that there should be as little restriction as possible to the flow of information via the internet. “Unlike any other medium, the Internet enables individuals to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds instantaneously and inexpensively across national borders.”The Special Rapporteur is deeply concerned by increasingly sophisticated blocking or filtering mechanisms used by States for “censorship” the report says.  France and the United Kingdom have recently passed laws enabling copyright owners the right to suspend internet services of those accused multiple times of illegal file sharing.The Special Rapporteur insisted that any restriction on internet access must be used as an exception and not considered the norm by States.“Full guarantee of the right to freedom of expression must be the norm, and any limitation considered as an exception, and that this principle should never be reversed” the report states. The report comes after approximately two-thirds of all Syrian networks became unreachable from the global internet.  The political unrest in Syria has grown over the past weeks, with more then 1,100 being killed since protests against President Assad’s regime began in March</blockquote>
