Oct. 21, 1988<h3>Sinhalese extremists kill Sri Lankan official</h3>COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Sinhalese extremists Friday killed a senior leader of the ruling United National Party in an apparent rejection of a government peace overture that temporarily suspended offensive operations against the group, police said.Members of the Janata Vimukti Peramuna ambushed a car Friday morning in a Colombo suburb in which Tudor Keerthinanda, a senior member of the UNP's executive commitee, and his wife were traveling, police said.Five attackers stopped the Japanese-built vehicle and one tossed through an open window a crude bomb that exploded and killed Keerthinanda instantly, police said. The assailants then sprayed the burning vehicle with gunfire and escaped.Residents pulled the politician's wife and driver out of the car and rushed them to a hospital. The driver was listed in critical condition and Mrs. Keerthinanda was treated for minor injuries.The attack came less than 24 hours after the government announced a one-week suspension in offensive operations against the JVP, a group composed of ultra-nationalist members of the majority Buddhist Sinhalese ethnic group who have vowed to topple President Junius Jayewardene.The government on Thursday also pledged to expedite the cases of 990 JVP members being held without charges under national security laws.The moves were aimed at encouraging the JVP to renounce violence and participate in a Dec. 19 presidential election and parliamentary polls expected early next year.
