"I hope that those bikini girls brought some attention to this story. Once as a kid I was on a family trip to Hikkaduwa beach. I saw such a girl and thought "Her father should be a millionaire. Otherwise how could she come for a vacation in Sri Lanka and keep relaxing like she owns the beach??” and I passed her, keeping some distance, wishing if I was born in a rich country…
Many years later I realized that she could also be that poor waitress girl from Germany, offering smiles to the drunkards in a pub, collecting trinkgeld (tips) for a whole year to take a two weeks vacation in the paradise island in her dreams. Not visiting Sigiriya and Anuradhapura since the entrance fees were too high... relaxing on the beach and enjoying the sun... because it’s free… acting bitchy and avoiding the local boys who say Hi to her… because of the fear that they will play some tricks and steal her money…
So what does she have? No house. No car. No fixed deposits in bank. No jewelry… And she knows that she has to serve beer for another year until her next vacation in Costa Rica… It seems that I was way richer than her. But why didn’t I ever feel that I am rich enough to enjoy my life? Why do I still feel that I should keep earning money until that brighter tomorrow (which never comes)? Why can’t I lie down on a beach and relax??
Crazy Sri Lankans… living in the paradise itself... being richer than the people from ‘rich’ countries.. and still not happy.. and still thinking that migrating to a rich country is the way to happiness…
What are we running after? Will the outside world give a shit how rich we are? No, they don’t care. We are just running after each other... All due to the curse of capitalism!!! The wealth gap and the existence of social classes... And the funny thing is, the real victims of capitalism are not the poor people. It’s the so called upper-middle class!
I see the children of the slums, playing cricket on the street, not caring much about the people passing by… breaking a window and running away before the owner comes… I see the young men on the three-wheeler park, relaxing until they get the next hire, smoking a joint, playing cards, making sexual jokes, laughing… their childhood gang still remains as the ‘bajar’…
But what do I see in upper-middle class families? Loading the kids with tuitions and ruining their childhood, in order to make them doctors and engineers, because other jobs are treated like shit… Spending millions to have their son’s wedding in the biggest 5-star hotel in the city… buying a luxury car that they don’t need… wearing gold necklaces… going to an expensive restaurant and struggling with cutlery… just to prove their social class to the society. And at the end, migrating to a developed country, to escape from the society… to make the society think that they live an awesome life... although they don’t!! And the countries which taught us the capitalism, get their educated workforce…
Well, I am not blaming anyone for trying to prove their supremacy over the others. It’s just the human nature. But… what if there were no social classes?? Then there’s nothing to prove… And what could that money afford us? Traveling around the world.. building public facilities.. helping the poor…"

It's not so easy as it sounds. It is because of social class and capitalism everything survives. What do you suggest,Every one to become a 3wheel driver or a waitress and relax on beach?Who would run mainstream ventures, the stock market if what everyone does is serve beer and relax in beach. This can be applied to few people who enjoys ultimate freedom. But this will never become a living reality on this earth let alone sri lanka.Middle class simply cannot relax on beach,if they did so they won't be in middle class in the first place. It is because of a higher class those 3wheel drivers and beer servers survives.Spending a 2 week vacation in sri lanka vs living in sri lanka is another story.
