The 102-year old Chinese woman, from Jinan, Shandong province, began working at a cotton mill, at the age of 13, and married when she was only 18. She gave birth to nine children, seven of which attended universities. Her children remember Ma Xiuxian and her husband made great sacrifices, in order to support their studies, but never got the chance to fulfill her own dream, of going to school, for the first time.
Ma Xiuxian spent March 31 among first-graders in a Shandong province school and called the day "quite satisfying".at the end of her first day at school Ma said, "Thank you teacher! Thank you my classmates! I'll study hard and make my contribution to the country."
Her oldest daughter is an 82-year-old doctor in Beijing. Seven of her children attended a university.Her youngest son said his mother always wanted to attend school. In February, Ma revealed her dream during an interview with a newspaper in Jinan. The Weisan Road Primary School contacted her and offered to make her dream come true.
During class, Ma used a hearing aid and magnifying glass to follow the lessons and the read textbooks.
