Q
When people talk about the United States bringing freedom and democracy to a country, why do they say that like it's a bad thing?
A
“Bringing freedom and democracy to a country” is generally a euphemism for airstrikes.
This idea is silliness worthy of a Trump tweet.
The U.S. doesn’t want other countries to have democracy. The U.S. only wants other countries to do what we want. If the leader of a country, or their elected government, doesn’t do what the U.S. wants:
If it is not a democracy, we will “bring them freedom”, i.e., topple the government they have.
If it is a democracy, we will, covertly or overtly, support the overthrow of the elected government. Examples include, but are not limited to, Iran, Chile, Guatemala, Congo, Dominican Republic, and Brazil.
If the goal is really and truly spreading democracy, then how the f**k do we justify Saudi Arabia as an ally? How do we justify having propped up Ferdinand Marcos for so long?
Make no mistake, the United States does not bring freedom and democracy to other countries. The United States does what it can to install regimes that will do what the U.S. government wants. That’s it. Remember, if you live in the U.S., that’s why you have cheap gas, cheap sugar, and cheap fruit.
