Moving pictures are a fictional thing in the world of Harry Potter, but no more. Researchers from the University of Washington and Facebook have created an algorithm called Photo Wake-Up, which takes static pictures, then creates 3D models based on them that come to life before your eyes.

    According to DP Review:

“The Photo Wake-Up algorithm is given a single still image, such as a photo of a person standing or even an image of a less-than-realistic painting. The system animates the character or person featured in the still image, enabling it to step out of the photo and move forward in 3D space. The hole in the image where the character was located is automatically filled in by the software.”

This use of AI is impressive to me. In the demo video, they made a Banksy mural come to life, a Picasso painting take a walk, a still of Gohan go up and down, and a photo of Stephen Curry run straight at me. Cool, huh? Some might even say this advancement in tech is strides ahead of what came before it (Get it? Strides? Sorry, I had to.)
