The Australian government announced on Saturday that it would close a loophole in its visa rules with immediate effect. Education Minister Jason Clare said the change was made because of the abuse of the existing "concurrent studies" rule, which allowed international students to take additional courses alongside their core studies.
These job opportunities are designed to educate and prepare them for the job market through short courses.
But the government says recent investigations have identified that many are abusing the law by abandoning their university courses and switching permanently to gainful employment courses.

There has been a sharp rise in the use of concurrent studies, with 10,500 concurrent enrollments created for the same period in 2019 and 2022 combined, and 17,000 in the first half of 2023.
Education Minister Jason Clare said in a statement that the option would be removed in future visa issuances because it was being used predatorily.

International education is Australia's fourth largest export industry and maintaining the integrity of the sector is critical to the country's economy, Clare said.

The government also announced on Oct. Increased from 1. , overseas students will also need to show possession of A$24,505 in savings over current levels, to take into account the higher cost of living, which represents a 17% increase.
