The Delta Plus is a variation of the original Delta variant, but with a K417N mutation, which affects the virus’s spike protein. It's known as the B.1.617.2.1 variant, and in the UK generally referred to as the Delta-AY.1 variant.
The K417N mutation is not a completely new mutation at all. It already is present in the Beta variant (B.1.351 lineage) that was first found in South Africa. Now it has appeared with the B.1.617 variants. Everytime the spike protein changes there can be changes that could be better or worse and the question is raised whether the vaccines can handle it.
This variant has been found in India, US, UK (about 40 cases) , Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Nepal, China and Russia. At this moment, there is no evidence that Delta with K417N makes the virus any more severe or reduces vaccine effectiveness compared to Delta.
However, all Delta variants are
more transmissible.
As for the query you raised I haven't read about Diabetes
particularly in relation to the
Delta Plus variant. But in
general scientists are alarmed of a link between Covid19 and diabetes, specially with children. Even in the case of adults, a UK study of almost 50,000 hospitalized Covid patients found that they were 50% more likely to have diabetes some 20 weeks after discharge than matched controls.
Some scientists suspect about the possibility that the pancreas’s insulin-excreting beta cells are destroyed either by the virus or by the body’s response to the infection. Several groups across the world are studying to find out more on this.
Note that
however, in India, things could be different. They indiscriminately use large doses of multiple Steroids to treat Covid. which ends up as a
cause to trigger diabetes.
