Bro, from my own experience my advice is if you are really concerned about being a good engineer opt the field you prefer most and once you go into the industry just work on developing your skills, then your field wont matter much.
Yap of course the current demand is for IT professionals but trend might not be the same in five years time when you graduate and you would end up disappointed.
I am not sure about in which area you would like to work in Mechanical Engineering but got to mention specially areas like building services engineering are very trending fields currently in SL and if you have the right set of skills companies may pay you well, even better than IT professionals.
