Abrahamic religions are a group of religions that share a common origin and belief in the God of Abraham, a Hebrew patriarch who lived around the 19th century BCE. According to the scriptures of these religions, God made a covenant with Abraham and promised to bless his descendants and make them a great nation. The three largest and most influential Abrahamic religions are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which together account for more than half of the world's population.
Judaism is the oldest of the Abrahamic religions and traces its roots to Abraham's son Isaac and grandson Jacob, whose sons formed the twelve tribes of Israel. Judaism is based on the Torah, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, which contains the laws and stories of God's relationship with the Israelites. Judaism also recognizes other sacred texts, such as the Prophets, the Writings, and the Talmud, which is a collection of rabbinic interpretations and commentaries. Judaism is a monotheistic religion that worships Yahweh, the personal name of God in Hebrew. Judaism emphasizes the importance of following God's commandments and ethical principles, as well as awaiting the coming of the Messiah, a descendant of King David who will restore the kingdom of Israel and bring peace and justice to the world.
Christianity emerged as a sect of Judaism in the first century CE, following the teachings and life of Jesus of Nazareth, whom Christians believe to be the Son of God and the Messiah. Christianity is based on the New Testament, which consists of four Gospels that narrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, as well as letters from his apostles and other writings that explain Christian doctrine and practice. Christianity also accepts the Hebrew Bible as part of its scripture, calling it the Old Testament. Christianity is a monotheistic religion that worships God as a Trinity, consisting of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Christianity emphasizes the importance of faith in Jesus as the only way to salvation and eternal life, as well as following his teachings and example of love, compassion, and service.
Islam was founded by Muhammad in the seventh century CE in Arabia, following his revelations from God through the angel Gabriel. Islam is based on the Quran, which is considered to be the verbatim word of God in Arabic, as well as the Sunnah, which is the example and teachings of Muhammad as recorded in hadiths (traditions). Islam also recognizes some parts of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament as previous revelations from God, but considers them to be corrupted or superseded by the Quran. Islam is a monotheistic religion that worships Allah, which is simply Arabic for God. Islam emphasizes the importance of submitting to God's will and obeying his commands (sharia), as well as believing in his oneness (tawhid), his prophets (nubuwwah), his angels (malaikah), his books (kutub), his decree (qadar), and his final judgment (akhirah).
All Abrahamic religions believe that they worship the same God who revealed himself to Abraham and other prophets throughout history. However, they differ in their understanding of God's nature, attributes, names, and actions. They also differ in their views on how to worship God, how to relate to him and his creation, how to interpret his scriptures, how to follow his laws, how to achieve salvation or forgiveness, how to deal with sin or evil, how to handle diversity or conflict, how to cope with suffering or death, and how to fulfill his purpose or plan for humanity. Despite these differences, Abrahamic religions also share some common values and beliefs, such as monotheism, prophecy, revelation, covenant, ethics, justice, mercy, compassion, peace, charity, prayer, worship,
fasting,
pilgrimage,
and
eschatology.
