Every indication is that Australia will not be supporting the proposed US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHCR sessions in Geneva, thanks to the indefatigable efforts of patriotic Sri Lankans based Down Under with the active back up of High Commissioner, Admiral (Retd.) Thisara Samarasinghe, a key member of a dedicated group said last week.
"We have been assured at the highest levels that the Liberal Party government of Prime Minister, Tony Abbot will desist from taking a stand against Sri Lanka at the forthcoming human rights sessions", says Nagesha Wickramasuriya, media spokesman for Australian Sri Lankans in Victoria.
This is a salutary achievement and a major breakthrough as Canberra co-sponsored the motion against Sri Lanka in 2013, he recalled. "As patriotic Sri Lankans, we worked very hard to make a positive impact and change the tide in favor of our motherland".
It was a tough challenge as the pro-LTTE lobby in Australia has been working according to a planned agenda since January this year to win over Senators in a bid to influence the Canberra government to support the proposed resolution against Sri Lanka, he said in an interview with The Sunday Island during a brief visit to Colombo.
"They lobby across Australia, with particular emphasis on Canberra, to influence the political decision-making mechanism and win support for their anti-Sri Lanka campaign, he noted.
The Tamil Diaspora had infiltrated the Green Party in Australia and even funded it to campaign vigorously against Sri Lanka and put the country in the dock over alleged human rights violations, Wickramasuriya explained. "It was a member of this party who was deported from Sri Lanka some time back".
"What the LTTE couldn’t attain with weapons, they are now trying to achieve through a sinister anti-Sri Lanka propaganda campaign. The LTTE is akin to an octopus – we have cut its tentacles, but not hit the eye. So, the ‘war’ is still not over", he stressed.
Q: How confident are you that Australia will offer support to Sri Lanka when the UNHCR resolution comes up later this month?
Wickramasuriya: We have been assured that Canberra will not support the resolution against Sri Lanka. It is true that Australia was a co-sponsor in 2013, but the situation has now changed dramatically. We lobbied vigorously to bring about this transformation. Unless, something unprecedented happens at the eleventh hour, the status quo will remain.
Q: You referred to patriotic Sri Lankans in Australia espousing their motherland’s cause. Have only the Sinhalese joined you in this endeavor?
A: No, we have many patriotic Sri Lankan Tamils also in the fold. They are doing a wonderful job with us to dispel the canards against Sri Lanka and allow truth and justice to prevail. They are on board with us on this mission. I should mention the names of Dr. Noel Nadesan, Kanthar P. (Nathan) Balanathan and Siva Sivanandan in particular. They all support us to the hilt.
Similarly, I pay tribute to the enormous work done by SPUR (Society for Peace and Unity in Sri Lanka), and especially Prof. Dasarath Jayasuriya, H. L. D. Mahindapala, Janaka Bandarage and Ranjith Soysa (SPUR spokesman).
SPUR Victoria played a key role in our successful campaign. A lot of work is done behind the scenes by SPUR, an active organization spread across the country – in Canberra, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western and Southern Australia. We maintain contact with all foreign missions based in Canberra and brief them on the factual position.
We coordinate with other patriotic Sri Lankan organizations in London, Paris, New Zealand and USA to counter LTTE lobbying and anti-Sri Lanka propaganda. We travel to Europe and other countries to help counter this vicious campaign. SPUR, which is self-funded through its membership, has branches, which are the "foot soldiers" who do immense work. Not many Sri Lankans are aware of the enormous work we do in Australia and other parts of the globe.
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Australia, Admiral (Retd.) Thisara Samarasinghe is a tower of strength to us. He plays a proactive role to counter the anti-Sri Lanka threat. He is always accessible and a dynamic person to work with.
He said that the US and the UK have vested interests in Sri Lanka. With the 50-year timeframe for the US military base in the Diego Garcia atoll due to expire soon, the Americans are on the lookout for a foothold in the Indian Ocean to achieve their own ends.
"That is why they are seeking a regime change in Sri Lanka to install a puppet government amenable to their interests", he asserted. "The whole objective is to have somebody on the lines of Don Juan Dharmapala at the helm".
Q: Do you interact with Sri Lankan politicians as well in your strategy to counter LTTE propaganda?
Wickramasuriya: We do. That’s an important factor in our campaign. We also had a fruitful discussion with External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris during his recent visit to Australia. His speech at the opening of the UNHCR sessions was excellent. It was well done.
Certain statements made by Opposition political parties are made use of by the Tamil Diaspora to achieve their own ends. We can live comfortably in Australia, but if there is a fall-out as a result of the UNHCR resolution, it is not politicians, but the common masses who will be ultimately affected.
