Kebitigollewa Magistrate and District Judge, Gayan Meegahage, ordered to place Middeniye Uditha Thera, a senior monk attached to the Kataragama Kirivehera Rajamaha Vihara, in protective custody until 21 December for allegedly keeping pornographic material in his possession.
The monk, together with another youth, was ordered to be placed in custody after police found a laptop containing letters from the Presidential Secretariat, several employment applications, pornographic videos, and over 450 pornographic images.
The monk and the youth were arrested on 6 November by Welioya Police OIC, Police Inspector P.R. Saman, on a tip-off.
Police said the monk has had past associations with the Chief Incumbent of the Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya, who has been accused of child sexual abuse.
The youth, who was found in the presence of the monk, has been identified as Devamuni Nilanga Chitrasena of Maha Kumbukwawa, Poonawa Madavachchiya.
“He has met Uditha Thera on the way to Nagadeepa, and frequently talked to him on the phone. About one week ago, Uditha Thera promised to find him a job by appealing to parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa,” father of Nilanga, Devamuni Chitrasena alleged.
The Thera has been associated with Mihintale, Nagadeepa, Muhamale, Vavuniya, Vellamullivaikkal and Kilinochchi temples.
Walioya Police has been ordered to present more information to Court on 21 December.
