Takashi Yanase, the author of anpanman and the lyricist for this song,
wrote this in memory of his brother which he lost during world war 2. He wanted to create brave characters that would give children hope and dreams.
Many children during the war, including Yanase himself, belonged to a generation that often went hungry due to the shortage of food.
Offering food to another person in those days could sometimes mean the difference between life and death.
Yanase believed that food isn't just goodness but also life itself which is why the heroes of his story are based off of food. They represent life and also the power to share life with others.
Anpanman gives the bread that makes up his face to the hungry.
The author said.
"The true hero would help the hungry child before fighting. I wanted to make such a hero."

Saitama is Inspired From Anpanman
One-Punch Man (Japanese: ワンパンマン, Hepburn: Wanpanman)
The Japanese shortened name Wanpanman is a play on the long-running children's character Anpanman, wanpan being a contraction of wanpanchi ("one punch").[8] One became interested in creating a comic superhero who was already the strongest in the world.
