Defending league rugby champs Kandy will decide today whether to continue in the season or pull out in protest over the detention of one of their players by a rival club Navy, the Daily Mirror learns. Nuwan Hettiarachchi, the Kandy player at the centre of the episode is currently being detained by the navy who have claimed he still belongs to them.
“We are taking a final decision tomorrow (today) at our special executive meeting whether to stay or pull out from the league”, said Kandy rugby committee chairman Lasantha Wijesuriya.
Kandy won all four matches so far they have played in the four week old league tournament.
Hettiarachchi played for Navy last year and crossed over to Kandy for the 2011 season after claiming his dealings with the sea-going force had expired and was not bound by any contract, volunteer or regular.

But Navy Sports Club took an enjoining court order against Hettiarachchi to prevent him from playing for Kandy claiming he was still their property according to a contract he signed.


Hettiarachchi was subsequently snatched by navy personnel from his residence and brought under detention according to service formalities and is now being held at a naval camp in Welisara.
But the player’s family members have made a police complaint alleging he was kidnapped and held in unlawful detention.
