First , this happened in South instead of North. If it happened in North without any investigation the credit would go to LTTE. Even now some are claiming and trying to boost LTTE.(Wimal, Gampila and the lot)
It is clear that this place is unsuitable for explosives. This is where Plywood Corporation Factory was situated. In 1970s SLFP govt created this to cut trees in the Sinharaja Forest for money! At that time it was the best location for transport of logs and after processing the timber to Colombo , for building.
I do not need to say the fallacy of this utopian idea and it did not work and the Corporation had the natural death, but building remained their property for a long time even in 1990s.
So, this location is not good for even an army camp. This is highly commercial and residential area and unlike Panagoda situated in low lying area.
So this should be converted to some commercial activity (of army or given back to government for some other use)
I am not an expert , but these facts are clear. I am a person who used this road for considerable time to travel to colombo and saw the trasformation of this place to a Military Camp, but totally unaware of having explosive storage facility (as oppose to Armory).
One other thing - if we have some excessive explosives due to end of war(eg. the pre ordered explosives arriving after the war or captured ones) immediately sufficient storage should be built, before Army buiding and butifying Colombo! (We know that after the war Army was used to civilian works,)
So it seems that they have neglected to secure their places before diverting to other work. so this should be the priority. Re assess the needs of the situation after the war and address urgent needs on priority basis.
The article here is a good eye opener and a starting point.
These things happening in US and other countries should not be a reason to let that happen in SL. We all know that Terrorism is still prevalent in Europe and also in US, India , Pakistan but Not in SL . Thanks to our three forces.
