Always rent a car at every airport. Only in the South Americas we had to negotiate with a travel agent. I could not hand over cars in other countries and had to drive pack to the point of hire. Practically not possible. Even with about six internal flights, the travel operators gave us a private van with a driver who will say take us from Argentina to Chile and hand over to the operator in Chile. On the way sight-seeing, lunches organised by the onward driver and after handing over us at the night stay hotel the next driver & guide takes over. Needless to say the arrangements were excellent, on-time, drivers very nice but doesn't understand english well as they all use Spanish - but we had no trouble.During the recent visit to Mexico, last May,  all our friends said to take a package but we didn't , again we hired a car and booked all hotels either direct or booking.com.Only the 7 hour drive to Palenque we didn't drive as everyone says do not do it alone. Initially I booked this part only using Viator but later found that Viator uses a thrid party agent. I called them direct and they offered the same tour at half the Viator price. The tour to Palenque started 4 AM from hotel and it was past 11 PM when they dropped us back to the hotel. There were about 25 Toyota 16 seater vans travelling one after another in a line. They meet at one point and start together. Only after driving for about 4 hours they come out of the lonely jungle stretch of road to stop at a town for tea and toilet break.All other remote places in Mexico we drove through, but only in daylight and had no problems. Wherever possible used the toll highways which are regularly patrolled.You don't need any agents to visit the Far-East.</blockquote>
