Sandakada pahana, also known as Moonstone, is a unique feature of the Sinhalese architecture of ancient Sri Lanka.[1] [2] [3] It is an elaborately carved semi-circular stone slab, usually placed at the bottom of staircases and entrances. First seen in the latter stage of the Anuradhapura period, the sandakada pahana evolved through the Polonnaruwa, Gampola and Kandy periods. According to historians, the sandakada pahana symbolises the cycle of Saṃsāra in Buddhism.

Moon stone not only shows the artistic aptitude of ancient Sri Lankans but also the creative thought they had. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country and the main religion we observe is Buddhism. Ancient Sri Lankans have used this moon stone to symbolize the reality of life and teaching of Load Buddha.
The outer most row with petal design symbolizes the different types of difficulties, pains, sorrows that human face in the life. Continues repetition of the four animals symbolize Birth, Aging, Diseases, and Death that every one face. Continues repetition says that human face to this over and over again. The creeper symbolizes the greed of human which bond the human beings to all these troubles. Swans with unopened lotus buds symbolize that the human who have understood the reality will travel in the path way to Nirvana and small creeper symbolizes that then that human will gradually reduces his or her greed. The lotus symbolizes that then they achieve the Nirvana where there is no pain or sorrow. If the meaning of the moonstone is summarized it is like this. All human faces to sorrows and pains due to their birth, aging, diseases, and death. They get all these things due to their greed to various things and this greed wrap the human so that they cannot see that they are in a trouble. People who understand this will do good things and they try to get rid of these things. Gradually they fight against their greed and enter to Nirvana. The symbol of purity is Lotus. This means that ancient Sri Lankans were very careful to show the beauty and a good message through their artistic works.

Historians depict it, there is no solid way to say its true or it was the real meaning! if it was really a Buddhist thing why was it used in non-religious places also? If you read the history you would know that! The Catholic church history backs that part.

You cannot argue history! Because history is just translation of what a person depicted. All the translators of our ancient history are Buddhists... If you don't understand, your a idiot not worth a dime. However this is why our Church History in Ceylon plays a role. A history well documented and not based on beliefs or depictions. The Church is always more organized than Buddhists... do you ever see our Priests acting like thugs trying to burn down mosques?
