Approval of Sri Lankan government falls to 7% in February

Colombo, March 21 - The approval rating of the government fell from 9% in October 2023 to 7% in February 2024, according to the latest round of the Gallup style ‘Mood of the Nation’ poll of Verité Research.

The survey showed that only 9% rated the current economic conditions as either excellent or good, which is a drop from 16% in October 2023.

Further, 90% thought that the economic conditions in the country were getting worse, whereas in October 2023 only 66% had this negative view.

    1. Government Approval Rating | 7% |

To the question, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way the current government is working?”, 7% (almost 7.5%) of the respondents said that they approve (with an error margin of ± 1.81%). The percentage saying they disapproved was 85%. The approval rating is its lowest since June 2022.

    2. Economic Conditions Rating | Poor: 91%

When asked to “Rate the economic conditions in the country today” as either excellent, good or poor, 91% said it was poor (with an error margin of ±1.94%). This is an increase in the negative rating from 73% in June 2023 and 81% in October 2023.

    3. Economic Outlook | Getting Better: 9%

To the question “Do you think that the economic conditions in the country as a whole are getting better or getting worse?” 9% of the respondents believed that the economy was getting better (with an error margin of ± 1.91%). It was 8% in October 2023. However, the percentage that thinks it is getting worse has increased from 66% in October 2023 to 90% at present; suggesting that those who didn’t take a firm view in October 2023 have now taken the view that it is getting worse.

    Survey Implementation

This regularly conducted poll is part of the Syndicated Surveys instrument of Verité Research. The polling partner was Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd. This instrument also provides other organisations the opportunity to survey the sentiments of Sri Lankans.

The latest poll was based on a nationally representative multi-stage randomised sample of 1,044 Sri Lankan adults from separate households and was carried out from 16 to 25 February 2024. This survey was designed to have a maximum sampling error margin of ±3.03% at a 95% confidence level. Error margins can be further affected by lapses that could arise in the process of implementation.
Personally I dont believe these people choose a sample that represent the population of the country correctly . Normally they have their own agendas and do surveys to plant those into the mind of the others .

This can't be true. According to Ranil Rajapaksha supporters, economy is performing superbly, Hon COPE chairman Raththaran is steering the country to become the next Singapore. Only NPP is holding back this massive economic development.

Shell gas is putting petrol sheds all over the country, while it is closing its sheds in other countries. Andani is selling us electricity 10 times the usual cost, that too without a tender calling. Too add more, Hon. Raththaran is the new COPE chairman. Sri Lanka is on a huge economic resurgence, even without recovering the massive bad loans by Ranil Rajapksha best friend Daya Gamage, even without recovering the central bank robbed money by Ranils best buddy Arjun Mahendra, even without recovering money from massive tax evaders like the distilleries who is again Ranil Rajapaksha best freind Arjun Aloysiuos. No wonder the public is so pleased and completely not fooled by Ranil Rajapaksha the economic wizard

Only thing now left is the kick out NPP lapaya and Harini out in the next elections, the two evil 88-89 pirates who made Sri Lanka bankrupt and everything will be fine and there will be no queues again.

The comment reflects skepticism about the poll's methodology and intentions, suggesting bias in the sample selection and questioning the motive behind the survey. Evaluating such concerns involves considering the poll's methodology and the reputation of the organizations involved:

    1. **Sample Representativeness**: The poll claims to use a "nationally representative multi-stage randomised sample," which, if accurately implemented, should ensure that the sample reflects the broader population's demographics and opinions. The process of multi-stage random sampling is designed to reduce bias and increase representativeness.

    2. **Sampling Error and Confidence Level**: The stated maximum sampling error margin of ±3.03% at a 95% confidence level is within the typical range for polls, suggesting that the results are expected to be close to what would have been obtained if the entire population had been surveyed, with a small margin of error.

    3. **Organizational Reputation**: Verité Research and Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd are named as the conducting and partnering organizations. The credibility of the poll results would partly depend on the reputation and history of these organizations in conducting unbiased and methodologically sound research.

    4. **Potential Biases and Agendas**: The comment's concern about agendas and bias is important but requires evidence. Surveys can be manipulated through question wording, sample selection, or data interpretation, so it's crucial to evaluate the transparency of the methodology, the neutrality of the questions, and the interpretation of the results.

In summary, while skepticism towards opinion polls can be healthy, especially in politically charged contexts, it's important to base critiques on specific evidence regarding the survey's methodology, the transparency of the process, and the track record of the organizations involved. Dismissing poll results outright without evidence can overlook the potential insights they offer into public opinion.

Above text is ChatGPT's 'opinion' about your comment.

I also think whoever is doing opinion polls have their credibility on the line. Having said that we can see government's claims about inflation, doctors returning home in masses.... etc are blatent lies. People are really unhappy.

Hitan won the presidential election in November. Ranil won parliamentary elections held separately in August or so. :-)
2015 Jan 8 - Hitan won election with support of coalition of UNP, JVP, Muslim and Tamil parties
2015 Aug 17 - The UNFGG became the largest group in Parliament after securing 45.66% of votes and 106 seats whilst the UPFA won 42.38% of votes and 95 seats.

None of the victories could be attributed to Ranil alone as when he stood alone he lost

Ranil led the UNP/UNFGG to victory in the 2015 General Parliamentary Elections. Coalitions are part of the democratic system to face elections. Do you think that's illegal?
