Bathiudeen ordered to plant the tree in the destroyed Kallaru reserve with private money!
The Center for Environmental Justice filed a case in the Court of Appeal against the construction of settlements in the Kallaru Reserve in 2015, one of the Wilpattu Forest Reserves. The case was filed against eight persons, including the Director-General of Forests, the Director-General of the Wildlife Department, the Land Commissioner, and former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, in connection with the clearing of the Kallaru reserve and the construction of human settlements.
The Environmental Justice Center has stated in its complaint that the clearing of about 2,500 acres in the Kallaru Forest Reserve has caused great environmental damage. Announcing the verdict, the Court of Appeal ruled that the seventh respondent in the case, former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, was guilty of clearing the forest and that he should take steps to replant trees in the settlement areas at his own expense.
