These pictures are from a vacation trip in 1988 to the west coast of Sri Lanka,. When taking pictures from the interior of the country, of street scenes, the living conditions of the population, the social conditions, the influence of Buddhism, the tourist infrastructure, it must be taken into account that now, after more than 30 years, the conditions may have changed significantly. That was my first trip outside of Central Europe and I was deeply impressed: - by the omnipresent musty humidity, much harder to bear than dry heat, - by the possible dangers (infections, snakes, diarrhea, colds, injuries from falling in surf), - by the openness and interest of the people (incidentally in stark contrast to the total secrecy that was later experienced everywhere in Morocco and Egypt), - by the friendliness towards the (supposedly rich) tourists, for example, being photographed is an honor for everyone, - often degenerating into annoying begging, - but what impressed and shocked me most was the incredible difference in living standards and lifestyle. The question of how our prosperity and luxury is justified in view of this has occupied me for a long time, but today I have a different view on it: not all the evils in the world are the fault of the "West". Because of the civil war between the Sinhalese and Tamils at that time, the entire north and east of the island were inaccessible to tourism.

In the hotel: an abundance of food and staff. Next to each dining table stands a personally assigned waiter who asks what you want every few seconds: annoying!

street scenes from Aluthgama you can also see two fish sellers... Source for the hotel kitchen? Cooked food is probably rather low-risk.

My three major tours are marked on the map, during which most of the following pictures were taken. To the north (Kandy, Dambulla, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa) with the travel company. To the east (Ratnapura) and southeast (Kataragama) self-organized with local acquaintances

Kandy is at an altitude of 500m, it is more bearable here because it is less humid than on the coast, there is a luxury hotel up there for one night. The hotel still exists today under the name Cinnamon Citadel Kandy (7.305765, 80.623612). A different world than the street scenes in Kandy:

There were a lot of tourists in Sri Lanka at the time, including on tours in the interior of the country. Nevertheless, at every stop you are immediately stared at and spoken to by many people, especially children and young people who want presents. It is impossible to remain unobserved for even a few seconds during the whole day. This also applies if you do not take photos and keep the camera hidden.

Luxury hotel in Habarama, each guest has a whole house at their disposal. The hotel is now called Cinnamon Lodge Habarama (8.034478, 80.748783). Apart from bedrooms, closed rooms are unusual in Sri Lanka, everything is basically open so that the air can circulate and thus provide some cooling. Luxury is relative: In my room it was unbearably loud with the air conditioning on, but unbearably hot without it. Opening the window was out of the question because of the insects. It doesn't help you get a restful night's sleep when 2cm-sized beetles are visible and audible running across the floor of the room. These memories somehow hardly fit together with the much nicer pictures you find on booking portals today
