The President’s Anti-Drug Unit says has announced a decision not to issue licences for tobacco and alcohol-manufacturing plants in the future.
Director of the unit Keerthi Bandara said that they arrived at this decision following a discussion with the President and the cabinet of ministers.
Bandara said that the cabinet made the decision to not issue new licenses for any factory that manufactures tobacco and alcohol and that they have been given targets to reduce alcohol consumption per capita by 25 percent, and per person cigarette consumption per capita by 50 percent by 2020. He also stated that government is also taking action to minimise the percentage of revenue received from tobacco and alcohol in the national tax revenue.
Presidents Media Co-ordinating Secretary Attorney-at-Law Rajika Kodituwakku also expressed views at a media briefing. He said that the Sirasa channel has launched a campaign to go from house to house and village to village; and that the government has to thank them for this programme, which they are doing voluntarily.
