Ex-president Rajapaksa visits Kandy

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Kandy today and met the Anunayake Theras of the Malwathu and Asgiriya Chapters, the Muslim Moulavis and Hindu Priests at Lohan Ratwatte's residence in Mahiyawa and discussed ways and means of restoring peace in Kandy.

The Anunayake of Malwatte Chapter, the Ven Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Thera and Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Ven Venderuwe Upali Thera said all communities should live in peace and desist from acting in a manner that promotes violence or provoke other religious groups.

Mr. Rajapaksa said the Mahanayake Theras, Muslim Moulavis and Hindu Priests should meet together and discuss how these contentious issues should be resolved and the area returns to normal.

He said the Sinhala community and the Muslim community should act with restraint and work together to avoid creating unnecessary issues that end up in clashes among the various ethnic groups. (J A L Jayasinghe)

I’m doing what the govt should do – Mahinda


Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa says that he intervened and fulfilled a duty which the government should rightly do, at this time of discord among communities.

He made these comments while speaking to reporters following a discussion with Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu religious leaders in Kandy this morning, regarding the tense situation which had prevailed in the area.

Rajapaksa said that he participated in the discussion due to a request from the Muslim community and that he played a mediatory role in what he described as a fruitful discussion.

He stated that the importance for the Muslim people to remain patient at this moment just as same as the Sinhalese people was discussed.

However, Rajapaksa charged that the government is responsible for the situation which arose and that the police did not have the ability to take decisions.

The former President further called on all communities in the country to act peacefully and with patience.

As a buddhist and Sri Lankan we don't want to practise violence but some of the muslim community in sri lanka is practising extremism for example they have their own marriage law even can marry a child ( younger than 18) and they can marry more than one wives and in last few decades muslim women are using full coverd cloth (like a ghost) even in banks and schools. other peolpe must wear helmets when they ride bicycles but muslims rejected that law. they asked for halal standard while other whole people are eating normal food. while other whole students are studying through sinhala, english and tamil languages muslims started arabic schools and they taught sharia laws and other extemist stuff. in eastern provience they tried to show that provience as a arabic by imprting arabic culture. if non muslim woman married a muslim man she must be convet to muslim.
due to above mentioned and non mentiond reasons muslim community became more distance from sinhala community and it causes muslims are rejecting by other communuites. These pressures also improved the last incidents. To end this I would like to mention again anyhow we reject violence as buddhist and Sri Lankan because we have seen 30 year war and we don't want it again.
