You know what? I used to think in that exact same line as you but not anymore cuz

1) Ranil never believed that peace among 3 races can be won by waging a war against the rebels. In my opinion, that's the same belief that the UNP top members think too, so they voted for Ranil over Sajith, although everybody called Ranil a wimp.

Mahinda, shares Sajith's point of view but look at the shyte Mahinda is in right now. On one side, he got to answer the UN about war crimes and LLRC. On the other side his own people are against LLRC (I am not sure whether he too is). For e.g. Sri Lanka mirror, today reports that his own brother, Gotabhaya is against the Tamils singing the national anthem in Tamil, although that is one recommendation in the LLRC .

So, at the end of the day it's Ranil's patience, virtues and his inheritence of JR's "kapatikama" , that's gonna win the race. US and EU loves him man, so did they with JR (Yankee Dickey). Not sure, whether you can remember but Ranil was even investigated by the Batlanda commission (JVP inferno 88/89), for those thousands of lives lost back then but US/ EU never got any issues with him .
