Twenty-five weeks pregnant, Bellis is stuck in Kabul because she cannot get her hands on an MIQ lottery spot.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's popularity is waning, two years into a pandemic where some critics have accused her of creating a COVID-19 hermit kingdom in the South Pacific.
The Labour leader's approval has just dropped to 35 per cent, according to the latest 1 News Kantor poll, its lowest level since she became New Zealand's prime minister in 2017.
Widely liked and respected around the world, Ms Ardern and her government's approach to the pandemic is now raising eyebrows globally as a pregnant New Zealand reporter remains stuck in Afghanistan because of New Zealand's strict quarantine policy.
Thousands of New Zealanders have been locked out of the country since the start of pandemic, unable to get home to be with dying family members or to be part of other once-in-a-lifetime milestone moments.
Key to getting home for all Kiwis is a lottery system run by the New Zealand government called Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ).
Winning a prized MIQ spot in the lottery lets Kiwis take up one of 4500 quarantine rooms in hotels, where they must stay for 10 days and take multiple PCR tests for the virus.
