so, to hack a GSM network, you need to know about "sniffing" in a wireless network. WireShark is an app runs on X11 which can be used to sniff wifi networks. you need to come up wth something similar for GSM modem. I would start getting a modem working with an app similar to wireshark.
GSM hacking would be a lot difficult than wifi hacking.
