Take a cue from ex-PM of Australia , who assumed the leadership of the party few months before the election(on the verge of defeat from Julia G.) but since he lost the election, as the writing was on the wall, Kevin Rodd resigned from the party leadership and left the position open(he did not even contest for leadership). After 27 defeats there are sections in the society who still wants Ranil to continue. The question is not who will succeed, but whether Ranil should step down. Leaders will emerge, there is no issue of finding a suitable replacement(there are lot of talented people in UNP). No cosmetic changes like this can restore the party. The leader should gracefully accept the responsibility of the humiliating defeat and resign and if not should be removed by the general membership!</blockquote>
