Rotana Jet Airlines flies to MRIA

The first flight of Rotana Jet Airlines to the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) commenced yesterday. This is the airline's first international destination outside the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Rotana Jet is an airline with its corporate head office in Abu Dhabi. While it initially operated only executive charter flights, Rotana started scheduled flights to Sir Bani Yas island in June 2012.
Its flights to Fujairah made it the first domestic airline to connect two emirates. Accordingly, the first international destination outside GCC of Rotana Jet Airlines are Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and MRIA.
The first flight was welcomed by Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne and External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris along with other dignitaries after the flight received a water salute on landing.
Rotana Jet chairman Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saif Al Nahayan, ambassador of Sri Lanka to UAE Mahinda Balasuriya along with a high profile delegation comprising media personnel and representatives of travel and trade sectors were on board of the inaugural Rotana Jet flight.
The airline will operate three flights a week from Bateen Airport in Abu Dhabi to BIA and MRIA using an Airbus A319 aircraft. Plans are underway to increase to six flights soon. The airline currently operates flights to Bahrain, Muscat and Salalah in addition to flights to Sir Bani Yas Island, Fujairah, Delma and Dubai. At present, the three UAE based major airlines, Emirates, Etihad and Air Arabia operate daily flights to Colombo. Rotana Jet's Commercial and Planning Director Rajendran Vellapalath said they were happy to be able to fly to Colombo and Mattala as the first international destinations outside the GCC.
The Sri Lankan expatriate community and the increasing number of tourists visiting Sri Lanka will have greater access with the newly introduced flights by Rotana Jet, he said.
Rotana is gearing up for a year of expansion with new routes steadily opening up. An estimated 250,000 Sri Lankans live in the UAE. Rotana Jet has entered an interline relationship with SriLankan Airlines. Accordingly, Rotana Jet passengers will have immediate connections to and from South Indian destinations like Chennai, Trichy, Trivandrum, Cochin etc via Colombo.
Flights will operate between Al Bateen Airport in Abu Dhabi and Colombo and Mattala on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Abu Dhabi to Colombo and Mattala flights will depart Abu Dhabi Al Bateen Airport on Wednesday and Saturday at 05:00 hrs while the Thursday flight will depart at 23:45 hrs. The return flights will arrive at Al Bateen Airport in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and Saturday at 18:00 hrs and on Friday at 11:45 hrs.
Addressing a press conference at MRIA, Rotana Jet Airlines chairman said he was happy to introduce their first flights out of GCC to Sri Lanka especially at a time Sri Lanka was experiencing a period of transition as a booming tourist destination.
Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saif Al Nahayan said this is a significant step for Rotana Jet, especially at a time when the economy of Sri Lanka is continuously growing.
He said it gives him pleasure to note that many sectors including tourism, travel, business and finance flourishing.
"Rotana Jet is pleased to extend its support to the goals of the Sri Lankan government to reach 2.5 million tourist arrivals by 2016."
Minister Jayaratna said he was happy to welcome Rotana Jet Airlines to MRIA.
He said the Rotana Chairman expressed his willingness to operate the flight in October 2013.
