Colombo, Dec. 15 (Daily Mirror) - About 10 percent of males in the country have become victims of domestic violence, health authorities said.
This includes physical violence, sexual violence and psychological violence.
This was revealed by the National Programme Manager of the Women’s Health Unit at the Family Health Bureau, Dr. Nethanjalie Mapitigama.
"While the majority of domestic violence victims are women, a significant portion comprises men," she said.
This revelation has prompted the Family Health Bureau to take decisive action by introducing a 24/7 hotline as part of the "Mithuru Piyasa" initiative, aiming to combat the pervasive issue of domestic violence.
The public can utilize the dedicated hotline by dialing 070 2 611 111, providing a vital channel to report incidents related to domestic violence. The initiative seeks to empower individuals to come forward, fostering a supportive environment for those affected.
In response to this disconcerting revelation, Dr. Heshani Karunathilake, the medical officer-in-charge of the "Mithuru Piyasa" centre at Colombo – South Teaching Hospital, highlighted the role of modern technology in exacerbating domestic violence. She specifically pointed to the increased use of mobile phones and social media as contributing factors to the surge in such cases.
The launch of the "Mithuru Piyasa" hotline marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to address domestic violence, providing a lifeline for those affected and encouraging a collective response to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of gender.
