Research costs money... Unless financed by Governments, philanthropists and companies have to back them up. You cannot just laugh and disregard at research. They might not be successful but the insights gained will be a stepping stone for others.

Epigenetics is a relatively new field. There are several teams working with Cancer for the last five years or so. Recently a UK team published the full genome sequencing of 30 colorectal cancers. These teams work on how cancers begin, proliferate and much later how they resurface from an epigenetics perspective.

Already tests have been developed using this to correctly identify 55% of women who were HPV positive who went on to develop cervical cancer 1–4 years after the test. (Sweden)
Not only the mapping the methylation of cells taken from the cervix can predict cervical cancer, they have also shown that it can be used to detect ovarian, endometrial, and breast cancers, too.

There is also the ongoing GRAIL project that seeks to determine if cancers can be detected from the methylation patterns of cell-free DNA found in the blood.
