Decibelle points out that friends names should show up under "Best Matches" in the game lobby, not "Friends".
Anyone still having issues with hamachi LAN coop would be to bump the hamachi virtual network adapter in the adapter priorities.

Once you launch Dead Island on Hamachi, but before you load up, set your online option to lan visible. Everyone thats going to play thats on the hamachi network needs that. Then everyone loads up, then goes to the game lobby, it will appear under best matches after 20-30 seconds or so.
After set Dead Islan Hamachi LAN Co-op for PC, you can just wait for some people to play with togather.
