I don't think anyone has a definitive answer yet. But after the SOHO data there was a possible explanation that it was due to the transfer of magnetic energy from the Sun's surface to the outlying corona.

What I was referring to was the Magnetic Carpet Theory which was proposed after the NASA SOHO project data. There should be NASA project page somewhere.
