There are treatment protocols in place like immediate sodium bicarb and a shot of Ethyl alcohol. Fomepizole should be considered as first line antidote. Fomepizole acts similarly to ethanol. It is a stronger competitive inhibitor of ADH (Alcohol Dehydrogenase) Sometimes Fomepizole might not easily be available. Ethanol competes with methanol for ADH, thus preventing metabolism of methanol to its toxic by-products. ADH has a 10- to 20-fold greater affinity for ethanol than for methanol.
