Sri Lanka tourist arrivals up by 4.5 percent in June 2017, passes one million this year

July 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 4.5 percent in June this year compared to the same period last year, surpassing the one million mark for the year, the data released today by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) showed.

The month recorded 123,351 tourists arriving in the country compared to the 118,038 arrived in June 2016.

In the first six months of this year 1,010,444 tourists visited the island compared to the 964,267 visited in June 2016, recording an increase of 4.8 percent.

Tourist arrivals declined in the May due to the partial closure of the international airport in Katunayake for renovation of the runway. The airport resumed full operations from 6th June.

Arrivals from North America rose 6.46 percent to 8,547 in June and the arrivals from US rose 5.7 percent to 4,347 during the month while arrivals from Canada increased 7.2 percent to 4,200.

Tourist arrivals from Western Europe reached 33,228 during the month rising 12.3 percent from the 29,599 tourists arrived in the same month last year. Most of the tourists came from UK (10,424), Germany (7,024) and France (3,365).

Arrivals from Eastern Europe declined 18.3 percent with the arrival of 3,865 tourists in June 2017. Tourist arrivals from Russia dropped by 36 percent while 26.9 percent less tourists arrived from Ukraine.

Tourist arrivals from Middle East increased significantly by 124.3 percent with 4,958 visitors.

Tourist arrivals from East Asia also declined 5.7 percent as 28,643 visited the country. Arrivals from China declined 13.8 percent with 17,205 tourists arriving in the country in June 2017.

Arrivals from South Asia in the month remained unchanged with 35,793 tourists visiting the island. Of those arrived from South Asia, 27,836 were from India corresponding to an increase of 2.8 percent.

Nearly 1.8 million tourists arrived in Sri Lanka last year contributing US$ 2.86 billion of earnings to the government. Sri Lanka's Tourism Authority has set a target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals this year.

Earnings from tourism grew by 3.4 percent, year-on-year to US$ 1.038 billion in first three months of 2017, according to the Central Bank.

JICA grants Rs. 17.5 bn concessionary loan for rural infrastructure development

Aconcessionary loan agreement for JPY 12,957 million (approx. Rs. 17.5 billion) was signed between the Government of Sri Lanka and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for rehabilitation of essential rural economic infrastructure in North Central, Northern, Uva and Eastern Provinces yesterday.
The loan will finance rehabilitation of rural roads, small and medium irrigation systems and construction of community water supply systems in remote areas which are not under the coverage of NWSDB.
The project is targeted to rehabilitate 560km of rural roads, irrigation systems feeding 17,735ha of cultivation and provide potable water for over 120,000 people within the 4 provinces. 418 sub projects in these 3 sectors have been prioritized through pre-feasibility studies conducted by JICA.
The project aims to raise living standards and improve means of livelihood in some of the poorest areas in the country, thereby contributing to rural economic development and reduction of regional disparities. Civil works for the sub projects will be procured in small packages to facilitate small to medium scale local companies to have the opportunity to bid, and also employ
local communities.
The loan agreement for the project was signed by Dr. R. H. S. Samaratunga, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Mass Media, and Fusato Tanaka, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka Office. The project is implemented by the four Provincial Councils under the direction of Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government.
JICA is the implementing agency for Official Development Assistance from the Government of Japan, and is one of the largest contributors to economic infrastructure development in Sri Lanka.

JICA financed 66km of the Southern Expressway and 20km of the Outer Circular Expressway. JICA is currently financing Anuradhapura North Water Supply Development Project to provide pipe-borne clean water to some of the areas most affected by CKD. The loan agreement to finance Kalu Ganga water supply development project was also signed yesterday.
“At a time Sri Lanka is looking to step up to the upper middle income level, it is important to focus attention on the areas with more vulnerabilities and disadvantages. Sustainable growth can be achieved only if there are growth opportunities to everyone. Rural communities have much to contribute to the national economy. Development of essential rural infrastructure will give the impetus to those communities to realize their full potential. We hope this project will contribute to reducing income disparities among communities so that Sri Lanka can grow, together”, said Tanaka.

Port City picks global architect firm for financial district

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), one of the world’s largest architecture, interior design, engineering and urban planning firms, which was judged the winner of the International Conceptual Urban Design Idea Competition for the Financial District and Marina of the Colombo Port City, was presented with its award at a ceremony held recently at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo.

The competition, which was supported by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) and sanctioned by the International Union of Architects (UIA), was conducted under UIA guidelines. Three top international names pitted their skills against one another over a period of four months, at the end of which the winner was announced. Nikken Sekkei of Japan, Gensler headquartered in San Francisco and SOM, which also hails from the US, were the participants whose names remained anonymous until the final announcement was made, in accordance with the rules of the competition.



The objective of the ideas competition was to inspire the best design and plan concepts for the financial district and the marina of the Colombo Port City. All participants were required to use certain aspects of the master plan as a guideline such as the specified roads and services networks, public areas and the overall development value. The three participants were given the freedom to re-organise the land use, mix, height and other development parameters provided they kept to the allocated boundaries.

Megapolis and Western Development Ministry Secretary N. Rupasinghe, who was Chief Guest at the event, said that bringing in some of the world’s best designers for this competition was a boost to the country’s image as well as the megapolis. “Unlike any time in the history of our country where our cities have taken centuries to grow organically, today we have a planned city which will be completed in 25 years. We will have to look at the demands and preferences of the future citizens of this city and that is why we need to have the best designers contributing their ideas to the master plan.”

CHEC Port City Colombo Director of Planning and Development Lim Kian Siew said that the Colombo Port City development project intends to create elite neighborhoods both on-ground and above-ground. “There would be smart business and finance enclaves of elegance and charm in a setting that complements and completes this futuristic collective infused with spaces and places of leisure, relaxation and entertainment,” he said.

The panel of top international jurors which judged the competition comprised the District Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission Dr. Deborah Dearing, who has over 30 years’ international experience in urban design and strategic land-use planning; Prof. David Dernie, Chartered Architect, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Westminster, the UK; Calvin Tsao, acclaimed practitioner with a leading voice and a representative of contemporary architecture from New York; and Prof. Harris Trevor Gordon Stuart representing UIA, the co-founder of Harris-Kjisik Architects, Finland. Pali Wijeratne, a highly qualified Sri Lankan architect and town planner with over 50 years’ experience in conservation, was also on the panel, representing the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects.

The participants separately visited the project site and development during the period from 20-28 March 2017. The international jury panel met over a period of three days to deliberate and decide on the winning submissions, which took place over a closed-door discussion held from 16-18 May 2017.

Giving her views on the competition, Jury Chairperson Dr. Dearing said that they looked at much more than the creation of iconic buildings in selecting the final winner. She says that they looked at aspects such as how the design ideas related to the environment as well as social and economic sustainability. She added that there was a distinctive difference in the way the SOM team had approached the project and it was visible in the way they had laid out streets, the sort of buildings they used and community facilities as well as opportunities of growth and implementation. The way in which they had created a relationship with these beautiful buildings, the green spaces, the Marina and public areas made for an impressive theme.

“We were not just impressed with this team, but thought that this was the way for the Port City in Colombo to lead the world in demonstrating new ways and innovation for the next century. We mean that genuinely and all the jury was unanimous in that. We spent a lot of time debating which projects performed better in a whole range of criteria and we are very happy to unanimously decide that the winning team is Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).”

The Guest of Honour at the ceremony, Archt. D.H. Wijewardene, President of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects, was of the view that a competition such as this should be made a practice for all landmark projects.

“Design competitions have become a world trend today as it helps to get different options and wider perspectives for a project and helps the project initiators to get an opportunity to see the most suitable and viable design solutions. This is not very common in Sri Lanka, but it should be made a practice for all landmark projects in the country. This will open up the stage for creative people so that finally the best design solution will emerge,” he said.

Bank of China to open branch here

Bank of China, one of the largest State-owned financial institutions in China is expected to open a branch in Colombo this year, its first in South Asia, a spokesman said yesterday.

The banking authorities are in contact with the Sri Lankan authorities to finalize the process. A Chinese embassy spokesman told Daily Mirror that it would be opened with an initial capital of US$90 million. He said the bank's presence in Colombo would facilitate Sri Lanka’s financial transactions with China.

It has overseas branches in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Kenya and the United Kingdom.

Sri Lanka assured cooperation with China’s One Belt, One Road’ initiative and is currently developing a financial and logistics hub in the Indian Ocean. (Kelum Bandara)

Champika handling hi-tech projects to deal with garbage

The Government is to make a call for Request for Proposals (RFP) for “design, build and finance” a waste disposal project to deal with garbage.

Colombo-based diplomatic missions will be asked to request firms specialising in this task in their countries to make proposals.
This is after the Cabinet of Ministers approved that such a project be sited at Aruwakkaru in the Puttalam area.

It was also noted at a recent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management (CCEM) chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that the World Bank has offered “Technical and Retroactive” financing for the project for two billion rupees in the current year with four billion rupees more to be allocated next year.

The CCEM observed that South Korea’s Dohwa Engineering Company has completed conceptual designs for “sanitary landfill and transfer stations at alternative locations at Aruwakkaru and Kelaniya.” The CCEM said initial Environmental Examination (IEE) was submitted to the Central Environment Authority (CE) on June 12. The environmental approval is expected later this month.
Besides this measure, there are at least two different Task Forces to tackle the mounting problem of garbage in the City of Colombo and suburbs.

One functions under President Maithripala Sirisena whilst the second is being formed under Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Faiszer Musthapha. It was in this backdrop that President Sirisena chaired a meeting of the Government Parliamentary Group. When the meeting began, he turned to Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

The President asked whether Mr. Ranawaka had any suggestions to offer on the issue of rising piles of garbage. The Minister replied that his Ministry had no mandate to deal with the subject. “I cannot undertake a task of this nature without legal authority,” he declared.

President Sirisena said he would give him whatever powers he needed and asked the Minister to provide him a note listing them out. It was done and the Minister is now on the job.

His first task was to consult top officials of the Colombo Municipality to make an assessment of the situation.
Minister Ranawaka has said that he would clear the garbage piles within the Colombo Municipal limits. The resources of the CMC as well as the private sector are being used for this purpose.

රට වෙනුවෙන් ඇස්, ඉස්, මස්, ලේ දන්දුන් රණවිරු පවුල් 3650කට තමන්ගේ ම කියා නිවසක හිමිකමක් නොමැති බවත් වත්මන් ආරක්ෂක අමාත්‍ය ධුරය හොබන ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මැතිතුමාගේ ධුර කාලය අවසන්වීමට පෙර එම රණවිරු පවුල් සඳහා නිවාස ලබාදීමට කටයුතු කරන බව නිවාස හා ඉදිකිරීම් අමාත්‍ය සජිත් ප්‍රේමදාස මහතා පැවසීය.

ඒ මහතා මේ බව ප්‍රකාශ කළේ පසුගිය දා ආණමඩුව "ගම් උදා" භූමියේ ඉදිකරන විරෝධාර "රණවිරු නීරෝ ගම්මානය" සඳහා මුල්ගල් තැබීම වෙනුවෙන් පැවැති උත්සවයට එක්වෙමිනි.

මෙරට ඉදිවන 423වන උදා ගම්මානය වන මෙම ගම්මානය නිවාස 34කින් සමන්විත වේ. ඒ අනුව මෙහි නිවාස නිවාස නොමැති අඩුආදායම්ලාභීන් පවුල් 34කට පර්චස් 15බැගින් ඉඩම් කොටස් ලබාදීම සිදු කෙරේ. මෙම අවස්ථාවට සමඟාමී ව ඉඩම් නොමැති පවුල් 58කට ඔප්පු ප්‍රදානය කිරීම, පවුල් 120කට සැමට සෙවණ - විසිරි ණය ආධාර ලබාදීම, ශිල්ප සවිය ඉදිකිරීම් කර්මාන්ත පුහුණුව ලබාගත් තරුණ තරුණියන් 150ක් වෙනුවෙන් රුපියල් 46,000ක් වටිනා වෘත්තීය උපකරණ කට්ටල පිරිනැමීම, නිල ඇඳුම් කට්ටල හා විෂයානුබද්ධ පෙළ පොත් ලබාදී සිදු කෙරිණි.

ඉදිරියේ දී නිවාස අමාත්‍යංශය ඩෙන්සිල් කොබ්බෑකඩුව, විජය විමලරත්න වැනි සෙන්පතියන් නමින් උදා ගම්මාන ඉදිකිරීමට කටයුතු කරන බවත් 423වැනි උදා ගම්මානයේ ඉදිකිරීම් කටයුතු ආරම්භ කළ බවත් මෙම වසර අවසන්වීමට පෙර ගම්මාන සංඛ්‍යාව 500දක්වා වැඩිකිරීමට කටයුතු කරන බවත් අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවසීය.

වත්මන් රජයේ ආයු කාලය තවත් මාස 40කින් අවසන් වන බවත් එම කාලය අවසන්වීමට පෙර උදා ගම්මාන සංඛ්‍යාව 2500ක් දක්වා නංවන බවත් අමාත්‍යවරයා එහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.

යහපාලන රජය බලයට පත්ව ගෙවුණු වසර දෙක හමාරක කාලය තුළ පාසල්වල සනීපාරක්ෂක පහසුකම් වැඩිදියුණු කිරීම සඳහා රුපියල් බිලියන 8 ක ප්‍රතිපාදන ලබා දී ඇති බවත් ඒ අතර පාසල් තුළ වැසිකිළි 26,000 ක් ඉදිකිරීමේ කටයුතු මේ වසර අවසාන වන විට නිම කිරීමට නියමිත බවත් අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍ය අකිල විරාජ් කාරියවසම් මහතා ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

අමාත්‍යවරයා මේ අදහස් ප්‍රකාශ කළේ පසුගිය දා අපේ ගම පරිශ්‍රයේ පැවති ජල හා සනීපාරක්ෂාව වැඩිදියුණු කිරීමේ වැඩසටහනට (WASH) තෝරා ගත් පාසල්වල විදුහල්පතිවරුන්ට චෙක්පත් ලබා දීමේ උත්සවයේ දීය.

සෑම පාසල් දරුවන් පනහකට වැසිකිළියක් බැගින් හා ගුරුවරුන් පනහකට වැසිකිළියක් බැගින් තිබිය යුතුය යන ජාත්‍යන්තර සනීපාරක්ෂක නිර්ණායකය අනුව මෙරට පාසල් පද්ධතියට සනීපාරක්ෂක පහසුකම් ලබාදීමේ ඉලක්කය සම්පූර්ණ කිරීමට පියවර ගන්නා බව ද අමාත්‍යවරයා මෙහිදී වැඩිඳුරටත් කියා සිටියේය.

තොරතුරු සන්නිවේදන තාක්ෂණය වර්තමානයේ අත්‍යාවශ්‍ය විෂය ක්ෂේත්‍රයක් වී ඇති බැවින් පරිගණක තොරතුරු සන්නිවේදන තාක්ෂණ විෂය පාසල් විෂය මාලාව තුළ අනිවාර්ය කිරීමට කටයුතු කරන බවත් එම විෂය ඉගැන්වීමට සුදුසු ගුරුවරුන් ප්‍රමාණවත් පරිදි බඳවාගැනීමෙන් එය සාර්ථකව ඉටු කළ හැකි බවත් අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවසීය. එමෙන් ම උපාධිධාරී ගුරුවරුන් බඳවාගැනීමේ දී අදාළ විෂයට උපාධියක් සහිත ගුරුවරුන් පමණක් බඳවා ගැනීමට රේඛීය අමාත්‍යාංශය යටතේ කටයුතු කරන බව ද පවසන ලදී.

ඩෙංගු ව්‍යාප්තිය පිළිබඳ අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍යාංශය සිදු කළ අධ්‍යයනයන් සහ සෞඛ්‍ය අංශ විසින් දක්වා ඇති සංඛ්‍යා ලේඛන අනුව හෙලිදරව් වී ඇත්තේ ඩෙංගු රෝගයට වැඩි වශයෙන් පාසල් ශිෂ්‍යාවන් හා පහළ ශ්‍රේණිවල කොට කලිසම් අඳින සිසුන් ගොදුරු වී ඇති අතර ඊට හේතු වී ඇත්තේ ඔවුන්ගේ ශරීරය වැඩි වශයෙන් නිරාවරණය වී පැවතීම බව හඳුනාගෙන තිබේ. මීට තාවකාලික විකල්පයක් ලෙස ඩෙංගු අවදානම සහිත කලාපවල පාසල් සිසුවියන්ට ගවුමට අමතරව ශරීරය ආවරණය කරගැනීමට සුදුසු ඇඳුමක් භාවිත කිරීමටත් පහළ ශ්‍රේණිවල පාසල් සිසුන්ට කොට කලිසම් වෙනුවට දිග කලිසම් ඇඳීමටත් මෙම කාලය තුළ පමණක් අවසර ලබාදෙමින් චක්‍රලේඛයක් ඉදිරි දින කිහිපය තුළ නිකුත් කිරීමට කටයුතු කර ඇති බව අමාත්‍යවරයා මෙහි දී සඳහන් කළේය.

එමෙන්ම සෞඛ්‍ය අංශවල උපදෙස් පරිදි ඩෙංගු උවදුරෙන් ආරක්ෂාවීමට ගත හැකි ක්‍රියාමාර්ග පිළිපැදීමටත් පාසල්වල ඩෙංගු මර්දන වැඩසටහන් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමටත් මේ වන විටත් උපදෙස් ලබා දී තිබේ.

සෞඛ්‍ය සම්පන්න සහ ක්‍රියාශීලී දරු පරපුරක් පාසල් පද්ධතිය තුළ ගොඩනැඟීම වෙනුවෙන් ‍අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍යාංශය විසින් ක්‍රියාත්මක කරනු ලබන පාසල් සෞඛ්‍ය වැඩපිළිවෙළෙහි එක් ප්‍රධාන ව්‍යාපෘතියක් ලෙස “සනීපාරක්ෂාව පෙරට” යන තේමාවෙන් ජල හා සනීපාරක්ෂාව වැඩිදියුණු කිරීමේ වැඩසටහන ක්‍රියාත්මක කෙරේ.

මෙම උත්සවයේ දී 2017 අයවැය යෝජනා අනුව පාසල්වල සනීපාරක්ෂක පහසුකම් වැඩිදියුණු කිරීමේ කටයුතු සඳහා පාසල් 1633ක් වෙත රුපියල් මිලියන 1869 ක් වටිනා චෙක්පත් ලබා දීම අමාත්‍යවරයාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් සිදු කෙරුණි.

මෙම අවස්ථාවට අධ්‍යාපන රාජ්‍ය ලේකම් තිස්ස හේවාවිතාන මහතා ඇතුළු අමාත්‍යාංශ නිලධාරීන් පිරිසක් සහභාගි වූහ.

මල්වතු ඔය ජලාශ ව්‍යාපෘතියේ ඉදිකිරීම් ඇරඹිමට සියල්ල සූදානම්

මල්වතු ඔය ජලාශ ව්‍යාපෘතියේ ඉදිකිරීම් කටයුතු මේ වසර අගදී ආරම්භ කිරීමට සියල්ල සූදානම් බව වාරිමාර්ග හා ජල සම්පත් කළමනාකරණ රාජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය පාලිත රංගේ බණ්ඩාර මහතා පවසයි.

මේ වසරේදී එම ව්‍යාපෘතියේ ඉදිකිරීම් වෙනුවෙන් රුපියල් මිලියන 300 ක මුදලක් වැය කිරීමට නියමිතව ඇත.

මල්වතුඔය ජලාශ ව්‍යාපෘතියේ ඉදිකිරීම් 2020 වසර වන අවසන් කිරීම රජයේ අපේක්‍ෂාවයි. එහි රැස් කිරීමට අපේක්‍ෂිත ජල ධාරිතාව අක්කර අඩි එක්ලක්‍ෂ හැට හය දහස් හාරසිය දහසයකි.(166416). කුඹුරු අක්කර 36,000 ට යල මහ දෙකන්නෙහිම ජලය සැපයීමත් නව වගා බිම් අක්කර 2000 ක් ඇති කිරීමත් මෙහි මූලික අරමුණු අතර වෙයි.

අනුරාධපුරය, වව්නියාව හා ත්‍රිකුණාමලය යන දිස්ත්‍රික්ක එකට යා කෙරෙමින් ඉදි කිරීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇති මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතියේ තවත් අරමුණක් වන්නේ ප‍්‍රදේශ ගණනාවක නිරන්තරයෙන් ඇති වන ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයන්ට ස්ථිරසාර විසඳුම් ලබා දීමයි. එමෙන්ම ව්‍යාපෘතියට සමගාමීව ජල විදුලි බලාගාරයක් ඉදි කෙරෙන අතර එමගින් ගිගාවොට් 400 ක විදුලි ධාරිතාවක් ජාතික පද්ධතියට එක් කිරීමට අපේක්‍ෂා කෙරේ.

මත්වතුඔය ව්‍යාපාරයෙන් ලැබෙන තවත් ප‍්‍රතිලාභයක් වන්නේ පිරිසිදු පානීය ජලය සැපයීමයි. වකුගඩු උවදුර පැතිර යන රජරට ඇතුළු ප‍්‍රදේශ ගණනාවකට මේ යටතේ පිරිසිදු පානීය ජලය ලබා දීමට ද සැලසුම් කොට ඇත.

ව්‍යාපෘතියට සමගාමීව ප‍්‍රදේශ රැසක මාර්ග පද්ධතිය ඉතා දියුණු මාර්ග පද්ධතියක් බවට පත්කෙරෙන අතර තන්තිරිමලේ ප‍්‍රදේශයේ අංග සම්පූර්ණ නගරයක් ඉදි කිරීමටද නියමිතය. මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතියට අදාල වැව් බැම්ම ඉදි කිරීමේ කටයුතු ලබන වසර මුලදී ඉදිකිරීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇති අතර ඒ වෙනුවෙන් ඇස්තමේන්තු කර ඇති මුදල රුපියල් මිලියන 12,300 කි.

ප්‍රථම බහු විශේෂ මුහුදු මත්ස්‍ය අභිජනන මධ්‍යස්ථානය මඩකලපුවට

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රථම බහු විශේෂ මුහුදු මත්ස්‍ය අභිජනන මධ්‍යස්ථානය (Multi-Species Marine Fin Fish Hatchery) මඩකලපුවේ දී පසුගිය දා විවෘත කළේය.

රුපියල් මිලියන 150ක වියදමින් ඉදි කරන ලද මෙම අභිජනනාගාරය යුරෝපා සංගමයේ සහයෝගයෙන් හා ලෝක ආහාර කෘෂිකර්ම වැඩසටහන විසින් අප රටට ඉදි කරනු ලැබ දී තිබේ. ජාතික ජලජීවි වගා සංවර්ධන අධිකාරිය විසින් මෙම කටයුතු මෙහෙයවනු ලැබීය.

දැනට ජාත්‍යන්තර වෙළෙඳපොලේ ඉහළ වාණිජ වටිනාකමින් යුත් සහ වැඩි ඉල්ලුමක් පවතින මත්ස්‍ය විශේෂ කිහිපයක් මෙම අභිජනනාගාරයේ බෝ කිරීමට පියවර ගෙන තිබේ. ඒ අනුව මොදා හෙවත් මුදිල්ලා (Cobia), වව්වාලයා (Silver Promfret) සහ කොස්සා යන මත්ස්‍ය විශේෂ තුනත්, ඊට අමතරව කකුළුවන් ද මෙහි අභිජනනය කෙරේ.

මෙම මත්ස්‍ය විශේෂ කොටු තාක්ෂණය යටතේ (Cage Culture) වගා කෙරෙන අතර මඩකලපුව ප්‍රදේශයේ ප්‍රතිලාභීන් 100ක් ඒ සඳහා තෝරා ගෙන ඇත. ඔවුන්ට රුපියල් ලක්ෂ දෙකහමාර බැගින් ආධාර මුදලක් පිරි නමන අතර, වාර්ෂිකව මෙම මත්ස්‍ය අපනයනය මගින් රුපියල් මිලියන 1000ක ආදායමක් අපේක්ෂිතය. එමෙන්ම 4000කට මේ ආශ්‍රිතව රැකියා අවස්ථා උදාවනු ඇත.

මෙම මත්ස්‍ය අභිජනන මධ්‍යස්ථානය තුළ වාර්ෂිකව මත්ස්‍ය පැටවුන් ලක්ෂ 08ක් අභිජනනය කෙරේ.

එමෙන්ම වෙරළබඩ ජලජීවි වගා ව්‍යාප්ති හා අධීක්ෂණ ඒකකය ස්ථාපිත කිරීම ද සිදු කෙරෙන අතර මඩකලපුව ප්‍රදේශයේ දැනට හඳුනාගෙන ඇති පරිදි ඉඩම් අක්කර 7000ක මත්ස්‍ය වගා කටයුතු පුළුල් කිරීම මෙම ඒකකය මගින් ආරම්භ කිරීමට නියමිතය.

Sri Lanka to develop 300 acres in Mannar for beach resorts

ECONOMYNEXT - The Ministry of Tourism Development said it has identified Mannar as a hub for tourism in Sri Lanka’s north-western coastal region, with a beachfront area of around 300 acres to be developed as a resort area.

Already over Rs. 40 million has been spent on making the beach areas tourist friendly and many other projects are being planned in order to make the district the main hub for tourism in the region, a statement said.

During talks between Minister of Tourism Development John Amaratunga and Minister of Commerce and Industry and Member of Parliament for Mannar District, Rishad Bathiudeen it was decided to position Mannar as the main hub for visiting key attractions in the region.

Amaratunga was quoted as saying that plans have already been drawn by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority to develop homestay villages around the Giants Tank reservoir to offer an authentic experience to tourists visiting the district.

“A beachfront area of around 300 acres will be identified as a resort area for accommodation purposes,” the ministry said.

“This area will be developed on a fast track basis with all facilities for tourists while priority will be given for eco-tourism projects.”

The main attractions include the Madhu Church Shrine, Wilpattu National Park and a host of other sites like the Thanthirimale temple, Thiruketheeswaram Kovil, the Dutch period lighthouse, the Portuguese/Dutch Fort, and Adams Bridge, a constellation of small islands stretched out over a 50 km sand strip connecting with India.

Lankan Navy prepare to receive its largest ship to date

Officials from the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) are in India to familiarise themselves with a new 105 m offshore patrol vessel (OPV) platform ahead of the platform's official handover, a spokesperson from the service confirmed with Jane's 360.

The vessel is one of two OPVs on order from India's Goa Shipyard Limited. The ship, which will be known as SLNS Sayurala with pennant number P623 once it is in service, was laid down in September 2014 and subsequently launched in mid-2016. The second-of-class, which has been given the pennant number P624, was launched in December that same year.

According to the report besides training and familiarisation activities, SLN officials are also there to validate various parameters of the ship against the service's requirements. Some of the tests and verifications are being done while underway at sea, said the SLN spokesperson. "So far, we are very happy with the ship's performance," he added.

According to Jane's Fighting Ships , the design of the OPV is derived from the Sankalp-class patrol vessels that are currently in service with the Indian Coast Guard. The platform features a full-load displacement of 2,350 tonnes, an overall length of 105.7 m, a beam of 13.6 m, and a hull draught of 3.6 m.

The OPV is powered by two MTU 20V 8000 M71 diesel engines driving two controlled-pitch propellers, and features an endurance of 4,500 n miles at 3 kt. The ship has accommodation for a crew of 118, including 18 officers, and can embark one helicopter on its flight deck.
