Italy’s Noberasco to invest in Lanka
The Lanka Fruit and Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association signs a partnership agreement with the Italian dried-fruit giant to boost quality, value-added products
Sri Lankan fruit and vegetable businesses are set to boost exports following a new partnership with the dried fruits and nuts company Noberasco.The Lanka Fruit and Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association (LFVPPEA) signed a memorandum of understanding with Italy-based Noberasco on February 22.
The signing comes after nearly three years of engagement and visits between Italy and Sri Lanka, through a project funded by the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) and implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and LFVPPEA. STDF is a global partnership that helps developing countries to better implement international sanitary and phytosanitary standards to improve their health status and ability to access markets.
‘Noberasco is proud of this collaboration with the producers of tropical fruits of Sri Lanka,’ said President Gabriele Noberasco, speaking on behalf of the Noberasco family. ‘By looking beyond one’s own borders, one can learn and grow. The main objective of this agreement is to develop new opportunities for Sri Lankan farmers, supported by Noberasco’s firm intention to invest in training and resources to obtain products processed in Sri Lanka with rigorous quality control to guarantee customer satisfaction.’
LFVPPEA President ZuraishHashim said: ‘Our vision is to have Sri Lankan fruit companies become the preferred supplier in the global market, and we as members need to take actions to make it happen. We call on exporters, producers, government bodies and development partners to address challenges and tap the full potential of the partnership with Noberasco for the benefit of all, from farmers to consumers.’
LudovicaGhizzoni, ITC adviser on export quality management, said: ‘We have seen the fruit and vegetable sector growing under the leadership of LFVPPEA since 2013. The cooperation with Noberasco is the start of a journey to Europe not only for commercial opportunities but for sustainable and inclusive value chains where skills, knowledge, technology, health and people are at the heart of the partnership.’
The Italian embassy in Colombo welcomed the beginning of ‘a long and “fruitful” cooperation’ on its Facebook page, acknowledging ITC for its support.

French company Boccard to develop dairy farming and processing in SL

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development of Sri Lanka signed a contract agreement with French Company Boccard to develop dairy farming and processing in the presence of the Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Eric Lavertu.
The program includes the complete modernization of six mini dairy processing plants managed by six dairy entities that are served by more than thirty local milk collection centers across Sri Lanka. The funding of 13.9 million Euros (approximately Rs 2,514 million) is facilitated by a soft loan from the French Government and monitored locally by the French Embassy in Sri Lanka & Maldives.
The pre-selected six mini dairy entities, located in Kaduwela, Attanagalla, Wariyapola, Polonnaruwa, Wennapuwa, and Batticaloa, will reach a global capacity of 4,500 liters per day thanks to state-of-the-art and computerized monitoring equipment installed by Boccard a well reputed dairy technology company in France.
Boccard is a French family-owned business with over 100 years of experience as a turnkey integrator. With 3,500 employees across 35 countries, it is recognized as a leader in customized process solutions for the dairy, food and Ingredients industries.
The company’s expertise spans from design and engineering, to manufacturing and installation, and through commissioning and after sales services. The expert teams design/build comprehensive and customized process solutions for advanced equipment from standalone skids, tanks and vessels, to entire turnkey facilities. The company benefits from extensive, worldwide experience and references in the design and modernization of food & Ingredients plants, especially for fresh dairy products, with key players and local producers.
It is expected to distribute homogenized, pasteurized and sterilized milk produced in those local areas will be packed into 180 ml pouches and 500 ml bottles and distributed to children attending schools in the neighboring areas. Boccard’s dairy processing experts will provide a turnkey solution to support milk collection, processing, and packaging, as well as a dedicated farmers’ training program. The government of Sri Lanka aims to achieve self-sufficiency in dairy production by 2020 through this initiative. The program also works to stabilize and increase the local shareholders incomes, helps sustain rural employment, and improves the nutritional level of the rural population.

Sri Lanka to issue on-arrival visas from 1 May

Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga yesterday said work is underway to implement on-arrival visa, free-of-charge for multiple countries from 1 May, to boost tourist arrivals during lean months.
“We will start granting a six-month free visa period from 1 May for selected countries during our lean period to boost tourist arrivals,” the Minister told the Daily FT.
The Cabinet of Ministers in February approved the proposal presented by Minister Amaratunga to grant a six-month free visa period from 1 April for selected countries.
According to that, visa-free entry to Sri Lanka will be granted to tourists from Thailand, the UK, Australia, South Korea, Canada, the US, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and countries of the EU.
In addition to those countries, the Minister hopes to extend the facility to all SAARC countries as well as to China, which includes top source markets for Sri Lanka.
Noting that it would be initially implemented for a trial period of six months and depending on the success rate, they will further extend the facility with more added features to make Sri Lanka an attractive destination for tourists.
“As the next step of this program, we are planning on setting up a permanent system at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to issue visa on-arrival, like in many other countries. We believe this would be a major breakthrough in attracting more visitors from this year,” he added.
He said that the technicalities and systems were already being discussed and implemented by the Immigration and Emigration Department.
Considering major MICE tourism events, policy decisions to ease entry to the country and Sri Lanka being ranked top destination to travel in 2019 by Lonely Planet, the Minister expressed confidence in attracting over three million tourist arrivals by the end of this year.

US$70mn from World Bank to improve local services in rural Sri Lanka
ECONOMYNEXT – The World Bank said it has approved a loan of 70 million US dollar to improve the quality of life of around one million people living in parts of Sri Lanka with pockets of poverty.
“The new local development project will put local communities at the center of planning and delivery of essential services such as roads, healthcare and sanitation through closer collaboration with local government authorities,” a statement said.
“This project will also pilot the provision of infrastructure services that will promote local economic activities and livelihoods – including roads and drains, markets, water supply, minor irrigation, IT connectivity, and rural electrification.”
The project covers the Northern, North Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka where pockets of poverty prevail, despite the island doing well in poverty reduction over the years with a national poverty rate of 4.1 percent in 2016.
A recent World Bank study of socio-economic conditions in the North and East found many factors challenging development in these areas, the statement said.
These include weak community institutions, gender vulnerabilities, especially among female headed households, trauma symptoms and risk behavior of youth and affected populations.
