ECONOMYNEXT - Capitol Development Limitd, a unit of Sri Lanka's Sanken construction group said it had completed the purchase of land in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo to build an apartment complex that will house 500 units in two towers.
The 'Capitol Twin Peaks' branded project will be ready for occupation around 2020, the firm said.
Designed by P&T Architects of Singapore, Capitol Twin Peaks will be built by Sanken.
"Capitol TwinPeaks meets the demands being set for urban, aspirational living in a rapidly developing economy," Mahen Weerasekara, Chairman, Capitol Developers said in a statement.
Capitol Developers said it had already completed Capitol Residencies in Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 07; HR Residencies on Havelock Rd, Colombo 05; Tulasi Mahal Apartments in Jaffna; business city hotel, Cinnamon Red in Colombo 03, Capitol 7 in Rosmead Place, Colombo 07 and Capitol Elite in Horton Place, Colombo 07.

SriLankan Airlines says loss reduced, six A320s on the way
Oct 05, 2016 (LBO) – SriLankan Airlines said in the financial year ending 31st March 2016, the airline recorded a reduced loss of 9.03 billion rupees, which represents a 45 percent improvement compared to the previous year.
“At the end of the last financial year, without the ‘one-off’ payment relating to cancellation of the lease of one A350 aircraft, the airline’s group loss stood at 9.03 billion rupees, which represents a 45 percent improvement for the 2015/16 financial year compared to the previous year,” Ajith Dias, chairman of SriLankan Airlines told reporters in Colombo.
“The net loss after taking the ‘one-off’ item into consideration is 11.59 billion rupees, compared to the net loss of 16.33 billion rupees during the previous year.”
The national carrier’s focus on re-structuring its operations to effect a turnaround is recording a significant reduction in losses, coupled with a rationalization of routes and aircraft.
SriLankan will lease six Airbus A320NEO aircrafts, four from Air Lease Corporation and two from AerCap to allow the expansion of regional routes, Suren Ratwatte, chief executive of the airline said.
“Five aircrafts will arrive in the first quarter of 2017 and the sixth aircraft will come in 2018,”
“These are the aircrafts we need to be deployed on regional routes which are profitable for the airline.”
We new have a fleet of 10 wide bodied Airbus A330s and 10 A320 aircraft and by the end of 2017 it will have 14 A320s and 10 A330 operating, he added.
The Airlines will also take over regional routes operated by Mihin Lanka which will stop flying in November.

Sri Lanka India economic pact to create US$500bn economy: PM
ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka will sign an economic pact with India by the end of the year that will expand trade and services creating a $500 billion economy with parts of Southern India, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said.
Prime Minister Wickramasinghe and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi decided to sign the Economic and Technology Agreement (ECTA) by the end of 2016, he told an economic forum in India.
India's Andra Pradesh, Telengana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had a $400 billion economy, which when integrated with Sri Lanka, would make a $500 billion region, he said.
Economic analysts say, until some European economic ideas were seized upon by nationalists after gaining independence from British rule and their freedoms were robbed through customs and import duty structures inherited from colonial ruler, citizens of the region traded actively and migrated.
From the time of ancient kings, Sri Lanka trade actively with the so-called Coromandel Coast (present day Orissa, Andra Pradesh/Telengana and Tamil Nadu and the Malabar Coast, which includes present day Kerala and Karnataka). The so-called Kalinga area, to which Sri Lankan rulers have claimed kinship, also falls around Andra Pradhesh.
Sri Lanka's original Austronesian culture and population, represented by the legendary Kuweni, was swamped by and replaced by an Indianised Hindu-Bhuddist culture like much of East Asia, resulting close trade ties.

Sri Lanka to build 100,000 bpd refinery with India
NEW DELHI, Oct 6 (Reuters) – Sri Lanka will build a second refinery with a capacity of at least 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) in a tie-up with Indian Oil Corp, a top Sri Lankan official said on Thursday, a move that strengthens New Delhi’s engagement with Colombo.
India has been vying for major projects in the island nation where China has secured multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects including a $1.4 billion high-end property development and others ranging from a coal plant to ports.
T.G. Jayasinghe, the head of state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corp (CPC) said the new refinery will be built at the eastern port city of Trincomalee with the aim of exporting fuel.
“Usually it takes four years to build a refinery,” he told Reuters adding that oil tanks for storage were already in place.
IOC’s local subsidiary, Lanka IOC operates 15 oil tanks out of the total 99 tanks there. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year pledged to establish a petroleum hub in Trincomalee near the world’s second deepest natural harbour.
Lanka IOC was given control of the Trincomalee oil tank farm in 2001 under a 30-year deal and the government has asked the company to jointly develop and operate the unused 84 tanks.
The nation’s sole oil refinery, state-run CPC’s decades-old 50,000 bpd plant, was originally configured to run on Iranian crude and Sri Lanka had to import more refined oil products after U.S. sanctions caused it to stop imports from Iran.
Oil Minister Chandima Weerakkody said Sri Lanka will refurbish the existing refinery to refine “a variety of crudes” and will award the contract through competitive bidding.
Weerakkody said the cost of the second refinery had yet to be determined. In August he told Reuters China and U.S. had also expressed an interest in building refineries.
He also said his New Delhi counterpart Dharmendra Pradhan had indicated on Thursday that the Indian government had agreed to convert a 500 megawatt coal power plant in Sampur in Trincomalee to natural gas.
The coal project has already been given to Indian state-run utility firm NTPC. However, residents in Sampur have opposed the project, citing environmental concerns.
“It will definitely be an Indian company that will convert Sampur (plant) into gas,” Weerakkody told Reuters.
India’s oil minister said India will help Sri Lanka increase its use of the cleaner fuel.
Petronet LNG Chief Executive Prabhat Singh, who met the Sri Lankan delegation told Reuters India is offering Sri Lanka an integrated plan to build an LNG import terminal, gas pipeline, distribution, and retail outlets with the participation of Petronet, IOC and GAIL India Ltd.

The nation’s sole oil refinery, state-run CPC’s decades-old 50,000 bpd plant, was originally configured to run on Iranian crude and Sri Lanka had to import more refined oil products after U.S. sanctions caused it to stop imports from Iran.
Oil Minister Chandima Weerakkody said Sri Lanka will refurbish the existing refinery to refine “a variety of crudes” and will award the contract through competitive bidding.
Weerakkody said the cost of the second refinery had yet to be determined. In August he told Reuters China and U.S. had also expressed an interest in building refineries.
He also said his New Delhi counterpart Dharmendra Pradhan had indicated on Thursday that the Indian government had agreed to convert a 500 megawatt coal power plant in Sampur in Trincomalee to natural gas.
The coal project has already been given to Indian state-run utility firm NTPC. However, residents in Sampur have opposed the project, citing environmental concerns.
“It will definitely be an Indian company that will convert Sampur (plant) into gas,” Weerakkody told Reuters.
India’s oil minister said India will help Sri Lanka increase its use of the cleaner fuel.
Petronet LNG Chief Executive Prabhat Singh, who met the Sri Lankan delegation told Reuters India is offering Sri Lanka an integrated plan to build an LNG import terminal, gas pipeline, distribution, and retail outlets with the participation of Petronet, IOC and GAIL India Ltd.

SL, Japan to sign key document to start Kandy urban development project
Sri Lanka and Japan on Monday will take a further step towards the new Kandy urban development program by signing the bilateral “Record of Discussion” for the project.
It will be signed by Secretary, Ministry of Megapolis & Western Development, Nihal Rupasinghe and, Chairman, UDA, Dr. Jagath Munasinghe in the presence of Minister of Megapolis & Western Development Champika Ranawaka for the Sri Lankan side and Senior Representative of JICA – Sri Lanka Office Toru Kobayakawa for the Japanese side.
The UDA and JICA are to commence a technical cooperation project to formulate the urban development vision and detailed urban plans towards the objective of enhancing the value and attractiveness of Kandy as a historic and touristic city, and realising its unique socio-economic potential while preserving its ancient heritage sacred to Buddhists around the world.
Through the project, JICA will support the UDA to prepare the urban development vision for the Kandy metropolitan area, with detailed urban plans including urban design guidelines and regulations to protect and sustain the heritage city area and recommend sustainable systems and a strategic investment proposal to implement the development plans.
“Kandy has a unique heritage and history which people from around the world gather to Sri Lanka to experience. More importantly, Kandy is a city very close to the heart of Sri Lankan people, for its significance to the Buddhists as well as other religions, and its importance in history as the last ancient kingdom. We look forward to sharing the Japanese experiences and lessons in developing such ancient cities in Japan, to help develop the true potential of Kandy. The key to successful development planning is mutual consultation and consensus-building with the many stakeholders, and we will make every effort to support UDA to do so in implementing the project, JICA Sri Lanka Office Chief Representative Kiyoshi Amada said.
JICA is also financing the on-going Kandy City Waste Water Management Project.
