Colombo Fort pavement hawkers to be relocated to new building

Oct 06, 2016 (LBO) – The Megapolis Ministry has received cabinet approval to relocate pavement hawkers and shops in the Colombo Fort area.

It was proposed to relocate pavement hawkers at Olcott Mawatha to open up the area for convenient pedestrian movement while providing access to valuable land.

The estimated cost of this project is 22 million rupees and the contractor will be selected through competitive tender procedure.

It has also been proposed to complete the construction of Colombo pedestrian web at a cost of 44 million rupees.

Seventy five percent of the phase one of pedestrian web project has already been completed by the Sri Lanka Navy.

First phase covers, D R Wijewardena Mawatha to Olcott Mawatha along the boundary of Lake House premises and Beira Lake Canal.

Second phase of the project will continue from Olcott Mawatha to Sea Street along the boundary of Sri Lanka Ports Authority Warehouse and Beira Lake Canal.

Coal carrier Ceylon Princess arrives in Sri Lanka

Oct 06, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) has taken delivery of its second newly built bulk carrier for the transportation of coal to power plants.

Speaking at the occasion Minister of Port and Shipping said that this will ensure energy security.

“Having our own ships will ensure some stability in coal delivery for our power stations,” Arjuna Ranatunge, minister of Port and Shipping said at the Colombo port, Wednesday.

“However, we have a huge debt to pay and we are now having discussion in this regard as this new ship has a big financial impact on the company.”

The next six months will be crucial as we will have to make a call on how to move forward with this debt, he added.

The Chinese built ship will help transport coal to the Lakvijaya and Norochcholai Power plants.

The ships has a cargo carrying capacity of 63,000 tonnes and can also be used for training purposes.

CEB Green Power Development project to be co-financed by ADB & AFD

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is to launch a development program to improve its transmission infrastructure and the efficiency of its medium voltage network with the help of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Agency France Development (AFD).

Following Cabinet approval, which was granted last week, the CEB will commence negotiations with ADB to finalise the terms for a loan facility to finance the project, said CEB spokesperson Sulakshana Jayawardana.

The ADB component of the co-financed project will amount to $ 150 million, payable in 20 years, while Agency France Development will provide a loan of $ 30 million. The Government is to contribute $ 80 million, which will be funded either by the Government or through CEB funds, Jayawardana explained.

“We will start negotiating with the ADB since we have got Cabinet approval. The CEB will be the signatory to the two bond agreements with the Government giving all guarantee facilities needed as per the loan conditions,” he said.

The project, titled ‘Green Power Development and Energy Improvement Investment Project – Tranche 2’ is set for completion in 2021, Jayawardana revealed. The project focuses on broadening electricity transmission infrastructure, increasing the efficiency of the medium voltage network and implementing demand-based electricity management through a pilot subproject in smart grid and metering.

One of the major components of the project will be to connect the wind power plant to the transmission system, Jayawardana said. The Nadukuda plant in Mannar will initially generate 100 MW, with plans to later increase it to 375 MW.

The loans will finance nine initiatives launched by the CEB under the project, including the construction of a new Polpitiya-Hambanthota transmission line with the development of the Hambanthota grid 220KV Substation, construction of the Padukka-Horana 132KV line and construction of the Colombo B 132/11kV grid substation.

“The transition lines of Kotugoda, Biyagama and Kolonnawa have issues with overloading. To minimise this we will make improvements to these lines under the project to increase capacity to deal with the demand and supply,” Jayawardana stated, adding that a grid substation in Biyagama would be constructed while augmentation of the Dehiwala and Madampe grid substations would also take place under this project.

The Cabinet will make its final decision on financing after negotiations with ADB and AFD are complete, he said. (CD)

KOICA Agrees To Donate Rs. 833.75 Million For Implementation Of Marine Science And Technical Regulations Project

KOICA, under South Korean funds, has consented in grating USD 5,750,000 (Rs. 833.75 million approximately) for the implementation of marine science and technical regulations project in removing marine debris and sediment in Sri Lankan sea line and for other related researches in fisheries.

Rs. 435 million out of the amount will be spent out for removing marine sediment and debris in fishery harbours. Priority will be given for the capacity enhancement of the fishery harbors and human resources development.

A discussion in this regard was held on 29.09.2016 under the patronage of Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera with the participation of the Secretary to the Ministry, representatives of KOICA and the officials representing NARA and CFHC.

Minister in this event appreciated the support extended by KOICA representing the Korean government for the economic development of Sri Lanka. It is highly appreciated that the international community like no other time in past has revealed an increasing tendency in supporting our country that has planned to reach high economic goals in a post war milieu, also said the Minister.

'වරාය නගරයට එන්න' - චීනයෙන් ඉන්දියාවට ඇරියුම්

ඉන්දු-චීන ආර්ථික සම්බන්ධතා නව මුහුණුවරකට යොමු කරමින් චීන රජය මඟින් ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වරාය සංවර්ධන ව්‍යාපෘතිය සඳහා එක්වන ලෙස චීනය ඉන්දියාවට ආරාධනා කර සිටියි.

Japan to fund Rs33bn piped water project to CKDu hit area

ECONOMYNEXT - Japan said it is providing a 23.1 billion yen (Rs32.9 billion) loan to build a pipe borne water supply system in Anuradhapura, a heavily agricultural area that has been hit by chronic kidney disease.

Japan said a high concentration of fluoride has been detected in ground water, which is harmful for humans. Due to the lack of rivers, people depend on ground water.

The 'Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project' will help families to switch the water source from ground water to surface water, Japan said.

Surface water may also help counter Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin, which some researchers have linked to contaminated ground water, Japan said.

Maga Engineering commences water supply projects to value of 8 Billion Rupees

Maga Engineering, Sri Lanka’s leading construction company, announced that it has commenced work on two key water supply projects: Towns East of Colombo District Water Supply Project (Package 2) and Galagedera-Mawathagama Water Supply Project.

Spearheaded by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board to fulfil the Government’s objective of providing purified sustainable drinking water, both projects aim to provide pipe borne water supply to an estimated population of 400,000 in the eastern part of the Colombo District and Galagedara, Paragahadeniya and Mawathagama areas of Kurunegala and Kandy Districts.

Constructed at a value of 4.8 billion rupees and funded by the Bank of Ceylon, Towns East of Colombo District Water Supply Project comprises the construction of a 18,000m3 capacity ground reservoir, supply and laying of 1,000 mm diameter DI transmission line of 8 km and HDPE line of 7 km from Iridapola Junction to Meepe. The project will be completed and handed over in August 2018.

Galagedera-Mawathagama Water Supply Project comprises the construction of a 1000m3 capacity elevated tower, 450m3 capacity ground reservoir and supply and laying of 250mm diameter DI & HDPE transmission line of 27 km, along with 113 km long distribution system. Constructed at a value of Rs. 3.2 billion and funded by the DFCC Bank PLC, the project will be completed and handed over in September 2018.

Commenting on the project, Maga Engineering Director Mega Kularatne said, “We are committed to complete these projects on schedule and bring uninterrupted supply of high quality drinking water to the residents of these areas and support Government’s vision to provide access to 100% safe water by 2025 and 60% pipe born water supply by 2020. We are proud to partner the National Water Supply and Drainage Board in this endeavour.”

The foundation laying ceremony of the Galagedera-Mawathagama was recently held in Galagedera under the patronage of Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage Rauff Hakeem.

Two major investments in sugar

Two major investors are set to start large-scale sugar production plants in the country to increase local production to meet 20% of the demand, the Trade Ministry said.

One of the investors, a company based in India, has already signed the agreement, with 20,000 hectares of land from Kanthale already allocated for sugarcane plantations. Discussions with a Korean company for another sugarcane factory will take place next week, Trade Ministry Secretary T.M.K.B. Thenakoon said.

“They will enter into a partnership with the Government and we will provide land to plant sugarcane,” he said.

The feasibility of providing 20,000 hectares of land from the Eastern Province is being evaluated at present, with emphasis being paid to lands available in Moneragala, Ampara or Batticaloa.

At present local production meets only 10% of demand. Sri Lanka imports 660,000 tonnes of both brown and white sugar per year while only 65,000-70,000 tonnes are produced locally, Lanka Sugar Company Ltd. Chairman Navin Adikarama said.

With the addition of the two new plantations, local production will meet 20% of demand, he said.

“The set goal is to be about 40% self-sufficient in sugar,” Adikarama said. Sugarcane planting at the Kanthale plantation is set to commence soon.

විශ්වවිද්‍යාල සිසුසිසුවියන් සඳහා නේවාසිකාගාර ඉදි කිරීමේ කඩිනම් ව්‍යාපෘතිය

- රජයේ විශ්වවිද්‍යාල පද්ධතිය තුළ වර්තමානයේ අධ්‍යාපනය ලබන සිසුන් සංඛ්‍යාව 94,000ක් පමණ වන අතර, මෙයින් 52,800ක් සඳහා ප්‍රමාණවත් නේවාසික පහසුකම් ලබා දීමට අවශ්‍ය ගොඩනැඟිලි හා අනෙකුත් පහසුකම් සංවර්ධනය කිරීම අවසන් කරනු ලැබ ඇත. රාජ්‍ය විශ්වවිද්‍යාල සඳහා ඇතුළත් කරනු ලබන ශිෂ්‍ය සංඛ්‍යාව වාර්ෂිකව 10%කින් පමණ වැඩි කිරීමට රජය සැලසුම් කර ඇති බැවින් තවදුරටත් නේවාසික පහසුකම් සලසා දීම සඳහා කටයුතු කළ යුතු වේ. ඒ අනුව, තවත් විශ්වවිද්‍යාල සිසුන් 9,600කට පමණ නේවාසික පහසුකම් සැලසිය හැකි පරිදි නව නේවාසිකාගාර 24ක් ඉදි කිරීමේ කටයුතු රුපියල් මිලියන 1,430ක පිරිවැයකින් 2016 වසර තුළ ආරම්භ කිරීම පිණිස උසස් අධ්‍යාපන හා මහාමාර්ග අමාත්‍ය ලක්ෂ්මන් කිරිඇල්ල මැතිතුමා ඉදිරිපත් කළ යෝජනාව අමාත්‍ය මණ්ඩලය විසින් අනුමත කරන ලදී.

විශ්වවිද්‍යාලවල ඉදි කිරීමට නියමිත ගොඩනැඟිලි සඳහා කොන්ත්‍රාත්තු ප්‍රදානය කිරීම
